Learning Activity Sheet
2nd QUARTER - WEEK 5
I. LEARNING COMPETENCIES:
1. Determines the relationship between the hypothesis and the
conclusion of an if-then statement. (M8GE-llf-1)
2. Transforms a statement into an equivalent if-then statement.
(M8GE-llf-2)
II. BACKGROUND
A Conditional statement, symbolized by pq, is an if-then
statement in which p is the hypothesis and q is the conclusion.
The Hypothesis or “if-clause” is usually the first part of a
conditional statement and follows the word “if.” It is the condition
of the statement.
The Conclusion or “then-clause” is usually the second part of a
conditional statement and follows the word “then.” It is the result
of the condition.
Steps in rewriting a statement into if-then form:
1. Identify the complete subject and the complete predicate of
the statement (predicate usually starts with a verb such as is,
are, lie, do, does, etc).
2. Write “if” before the complete subject to form the “if-clause.”
3. Write “then” before the complete predicate to form the
“then-clause.”
4. Combine the “if-clause” and the “then-clause” to form your
conditional statement.
Note: Strictly observe subject-verb agreement in writing the
hypothesis and the conclusion.

IV. ACTIVITY
A. Identifying the Hypothesis and Conclusion of a Conditional
Statement
Example 1: If today is Friday, then tomorrow is Saturday.
Hypothesis: Today is Friday.
Conclusion: Tomorrow is Saturday.
Note: The hypothesis of a conditional statement is the phrase
immediately following the word “if.” The conclusion of a
conditional statement is the phrase immediately following the
word “then.”
Example 2: If two lines form right angles, then the lines are
perpendicular.
Hypothesis: Two lines form right angles.
Conclusion: The lines are perpendicular.
Note: The hypothesis of a conditional statement is the phrase
immediately following the word “if.” The conclusion of a
conditional statement is the phrase immediately following the
word “then.”
B. Rewriting Statements into if-then form
Example 1: Banana is high in Potassium.
Step 1: Identify the complete subject and complete predicate.
Complete Subject: Banana
3
Written by:
HERNANI C. SAMONTE JR., NOHS 12/2020
Complete Predicate: is high in Potassium
Step 2: Write if before the subject to form the “if-clause.”
If-clause: If a fruit is a banana.
Note: A one-word subject must be categorized; such as fruit,
person, subject, place, etc.
Step 3: Write then before the predicate to form the “then-
clause.”
Then-clause: Then it is high in Potassium
Note: The pronoun “it” is added referring to banana to make
a complete thought.
Step 4: Combine the “if-clause” and the “then-clause” to form
your Conditional Statement.
Conditional Statement:
If a fruit is a banana, then it is high in Potassium.
Example 2: Mathematics is fun.
Step 1: Identify the complete subject and complete predicate.
Complete Subject: Mathematics
Complete Predicate: is fun
Step 2: Write if before the subject to form the “if-clause.”
If-clause: If the subject is Mathematics
Note: A one-word subject must be categorized; such as fruit,
person, subject, place, etc.
Step 3: Write then before the predicate to form the “then-
clause.”
Then-clause: Then it is fun
Note: The pronoun “it” is added referring to Mathematics to
make a complete thought.

HERNANI C. SAMONTE JR., NOHS 12/2020
Step 4: Combine the “if-clause” and the “then-clause” to form
your Conditional Statement.
Conditional Statement:
If the subject is Mathematics, then it is fun.
Example 3: Equilateral triangles are equiangular.
Step 1: Identify the complete subject and complete predicate.
Complete Subject: Equilateral triangles
Complete Predicate: are equiangular
Step 2: Write if before the subject to form the “if-clause.”
If-clause: If the triangles are equilateral
Note: If the complete subject is made up of an adjective and
followed by a noun, the noun comes first before the adjective
in writing the hypothesis.
Step 3: Write then before the predicate to form the “then-
clause.”
Then-clause: They are equiangular.
Note: The pronoun “they” is added referring to triangles to
make a complete thought.
Step 4: Combine the “if-clause” and the “then-clause” to form
your Conditional Statement.
Conditional Statement:
If the triangles are equilateral, then they are equiangular.
Example 4: Collinear points lie on the same line.
Step 1: Identify the complete subject and complete predicate.
Complete Subject: Collinear points
Complete Predicate: lie on the same line
Step 2: Write if before the subject to form the “if-clause”
5
Written by:
HERNANI C. SAMONTE JR., NOHS 12/2020
If-clause: If points are collinear
Note: If the complete subject is made up of an adjective and
followed by a noun, the noun comes first before the adjective
in writing the hypothesis.
Step 3: Write then before the predicate to form the “then-
clause.”
Then-clause: Then they lie on the same line.
Note: The pronoun “they” is added referring to points to
make a complete thought.
Step 4: Combine the “if-clause” and the “then-clause” to form
your Conditional Statement.
Conditional Statement:
If points are collinear, then they lie on the same line.
