Introduction :-
Photogrammetry is a technique used to obtain precise
measurements and create 3D models from photographs. The method dates back to
the mid-19th century and has evolved significantly with advancements in computer
technology, drone imaging, and digital cameras. The primary principle of
photogrammetry involves capturing multiple overlapping images of a subject from
different angles and processing them to extract spatial information. It is widely used
in industries such as surveying, archaeology, architecture, gaming, construction,
and disaster management.

There are two main types of photogrammetry:


1. Terrestrial Photogrammetry: Involves capturing images from a ground-based
camera.

2. Aerial Photogrammetry: Utilizes drones, planes, or satellites to photograph large


areas.
THEORY

Modern photogrammetry heavily relies on software tools that use algorithms to


stitch images and generate high-resolution point clouds, meshes, or textured 3D
models.

Process of Photogrammetry

1. Image Capture:
High-quality photographs are taken from different angles, ensuring at least 60-80%
overlap between adjacent images. This overlap is essential for software to correlate
matching points.

2. Preprocessing:
Images are imported into photogrammetry software (e.g., Agisoft Meta-shape,
Pix4D, or Reality Capture). The software aligns the images using key point
detection algorithms.

3. Point Cloud Generation:


From the aligned photos, the software generates a dense 3D point cloud,
representing the spatial structure of the object or scene.

4. Mesh and Texture Creation:


The point cloud is converted into a triangular mesh, and high-resolution textures are
applied for realistic rendering.

5. Analysis and Output:


The resulting 3D model can be analyzed, measured, and exported for various uses,
including GIS mapping, construction, or virtual environments.
Applications of Photogrammetry

1. Surveying and Mapping:


Photogrammetry is commonly used for topographical mapping, creating digital
elevation models (DEMs), and orthophotos.
2. Cultural Heritage and Archaeology:
Used to document artifacts, monuments, and excavation sites with high precision.
3. Gaming and Virtual Reality:
Enables the creation of realistic environments by capturing real-world textures and
structures.
4. Forensics:
Helps in accident reconstruction and crime scene documentation.
5. Construction and Infrastructure:
Used for progress monitoring, site planning, and as-built model verification.

Procedure:
1. 36 photos were captured, ensuring 75% overlap.
2. Images were imported into the software, and the photogrammetric pipeline
(alignment, point cloud, mesh generation, and texturing) was completed.
3. A detailed 3D model was generated with a resolution of 0.1 mm per pixel.

Observations:
The model accurately represented the physical object, showing fine details such as
texture and surface irregularities.
Processing time for 36 images was approximately 20 minutes.
The model was exported in OBJ format and used in a virtual environment
application.
1. Point Cloud Representation:
A dense point cloud showing millions of points reconstructing the object's spatial
structure.

2. Wireframe Mesh:
A triangular mesh model derived from the point cloud.

3. Final Textured 3D Model:


Fully textured 3D model with realistic details.
Results:-
To demonstrate the capabilities of photogrammetry, we captured a 3D model of a
historical artifact using the Agisoft Metashape software.
Object: A small statuette.
Equipment Used:
Camera: Canon EOS 90D DSLR.
Lighting: Softbox to eliminate shadows.

Conclusion :-
Photogrammetry is a powerful tool that bridges the gap between the physical and
digital worlds. It is a cost-effective and versatile method for creating 3D models and
measurements across various industries. With advancements in AI and hardware,
the accuracy and speed of photogrammetry are expected to improve, making it an
even more integral part of modern technology.
