GRAMMAR:
Grammar 1: Quantifiers

each, every, either + singular countable noun

most, little. some, much, a little, any, + uncountable noun
all,no. Ex: water, furniture, data,…
no, few, all, most, a few, any, both, + plural noun
many, some.
- We can use most quantifiers with of before a determiner (e.g. the, his, these)
and a noun.
Ex: All of my friends have got phones.
- However, we cannot use of with every or no. Instead, we use every one of and
none of with a plural verb or with a singular verb (in formal style).
Ex: None of my friends have/has got a tablet.
Grammar 2:Must and have to, modals in the past
● Must and have to:
- Must and have to both mean obligation. Must expresses obligation
imposed by the speaker while have to expresses external obligation.
- Musn’t: it’s necessary not to do sth
- Don’t have to: it’s not necessary to do sth
● Modal verbs:
Can: Used to express ability, possibility, permission, or request.
Example: "She can speak French fluently."
Could: The past tense of "can," used to indicate past ability, permission,
or possibility.
Example: "When I was younger, I could run much faster."
Will: Typically used to express future tense or willingness.
Example: "She will come to the party tomorrow."
Would: Often used to indicate politeness, make requests, or express
conditional situations.
Example: "Would you like some coffee?"
May: Used to express possibility, permission, or uncertainty.
Example: "You may leave the room now."
Might: Similar to "may," indicating possibility, but with a lesser degree
of certainty.
Example: "It might rain later."
Must: Indicates necessity or strong obligation.
Example: "You must finish your homework before you can go out."
Should: Used to express advice, recommendation, or expectation.
Example: "You should eat more vegetables for better health."
Shall: Often used in formal or legal contexts, or to suggest something.
Example: "Shall we go for a walk?"
Ought to: Similar in meaning to "should," expressing obligation,
advisability, or desirability.
Example: "You ought to apologize for your behavior."
Need to: Indicates necessity or obligation.
Example: "I need to finish this project by tomorrow."
Have to: Also indicates necessity or obligation.
Example: "We have to be at the airport by 8 AM."

Grammar 3: Concession clauses

- Using concession clauses can make your arguments more balanced.

- We can use although/even though/though to introduce a concession clause.
The clause can come before or after the main clause.
Although / Even though / Though + S1 + V1, S2 + V2.
S2 + V2 + although / even though / though + S1 + V1
Ex: Although it was raining, he walked to the park.
= He walked to the park although it was raining

- In spite of and despite also express concession, but are followed by a noun or -
ing form , not a clause.
Despite / In spite of / Regardless of + Noun / V-ing (+ N/ Adv), S + V.

Ex: Despite the very difficult test, he was able to do it well.

Practice 1. Read the passage and choose True or False.

An organization called the World Future Society publishes a yearly report about how
technology, the economy and society are influencing the world. Tim Mack heads the
World Future Society. He says medicine is one area of growth. Mr. Mack says the
fields of nanotechnology, biotechnology and information technology are working
together to create new ways to help patients. These include better ways to provide
medicine and identify disease without invasive operations. Mr. Mack also says
developments in artificial intelligence could lead to a future where disabled patients
could be cared for by a voice-activated robot. The World Future Society also
publishes The Futurist magazine. Every year it examines developments in technology
and other areas to predict the future. The magazine released the top ten predictions
from the Outlook 2011 report. Several of the predictions dealt with technology. The
report said Internet search engines will soon include both text and spoken results. It
said television broadcasts and other recordings could be gathered using programs
developed by the Fraunhofer Institute for Intelligent Analysis. Outlook 2011 also
examined refuse collection. It said industrial nations will send much more waste to
developing countries. This will cause protests in those countries. In about fifteen
years, developing countries will stop accepting foreign waste. This will force
industrial nations to develop better waste-to-energy programs and recycling
technologies.
Are these statements True or False?
1. The fields of nanotechnology, biotechnology and information technology can
provide medicine and identify disease without invasion operations.___________
2. Disabled patients could be cared for by any kind of robot.______
3. The Futurist magazine examines developments in commerce in the future._______
4. Waste-to-energy programs and recycling technologies will be improved to replace
the method of exporting waste to other countries.________

Practice 2: Read the passage, and choose the correct answer A, B, C or B for each
question.
The Rise of Robots
As kids, our grandparents frequently scared us by talking about how difficult life was
when they were growing up. They mentioned walking miles to school in the snow, or
doing hours of manual labour for little pay. Life has changed greatly since then, and it
seems to get easier year by year. In fact, with the help of robots we soon might have
nothing to do much at all. But is this a good thing?
By 2030, it’s estimated that robotics will be a 10 billion dollar business worldwide.
Companies are already starting to integrate them into the workforce. The electronics
manufacturer Foxconn is drawing up plans to launch a factory within the next 10 years
that’s completely staffed by robot workers.
Meanwhile, an American company Briggo has invented a robot that serves gourmet-
quality coffee to customers. With the push of a button it will crush coffee beans,
measure exact quantities of water, and even wave a steam wand to ensure customers
get the perfect cream on top. Unlike human baristas, it can serve multiple drinks at
once and work all day and night without a break.
Robots are also invading our homes. The Rooma is a mini-robot that vacuums rooms
automatically according to a schedule. The Robomow is a device that will cut the
grass for you while you sit in the shade. Then there’s the Nanda clocky, an alarm
clock that makes sure that even the deepest sleepers get up on time. The clock is
attached to a pair of wheels, and it will randomly move around the room.
Once you finally catch it, you’re probably too awake to hit the snooze button.
Although these early home robots are somewhat basic, they will likely become more
capable as times goes on.
Although robots certainly help us to eliminate tedious tasks, many people are
concerned about a future filled with robots. Some fear that humanity will start to
decline if machines do everything for us.
Others have even warned about the robot rebellion, in which robots become so smart
that they may decide to turn on their masters. These ideas may seem a bit far-fetched,
but there are certainly lots of questions that need to be answered before everyone
opens up to the idea of a robotic future.
