Assignment: 1 Course code: CVE 302

Unit: 1. Geotechnical Investigation Course instructor: Dr. Raviteja KVNS

1. Determine the area ratios for the following soil samplers and comment on the nature
of samples obtained in eachof the samplers.
(a) Core cutter- Outer diameter= 100 mm & Inner diameter= 95 mm
(b) Split barrel- Outer diameter= 38.1 mm & Inner diameter= 25.4 mm
(c) Seamless tube (Shelby) - Outer diameter= 76.2 mm & Inner diameter= 73 mm

2. The field N value in a deposit of fully submerged fine sand was 35 at a depth of 8
meters. The average saturatedunit weight of the soil is 18.5 kN/m³. Calculate the
corrected N value as per IS: 2131-1981.

3. The cone penetration resistance obtained in a clay soil during a CPT was 65 kg/cm².
Determine the undrained strength of the clay. The total overburden pressure at the
depth was 120 kN/m².

4. A SPT was conducted in a dense sand deposit at a depth of 22 m, and a value of 48 was
observed for N. The density of the sand was 15 kN/m2. What is the value of N,
corrected for overburden pressure?

5. Compute the area ratio of a thin-walled tube samples having an external diameter of
6 cm and a wall thickness of 2.25 mm. Do you recommend the sampler for obtaining
undisturbed soil samples? Why?
