EMBEDDED SYSTEMS - 15EE63C 2020-21

UNIT 1

Introduction to Microcontrollers and their Applications

Session1

Introduction
In 1981, Intel introduced an 8-bit microcontroller called the 8051. It was referred as
system on a chip because it had 128 bytes of RAM, 4K byte of on-chip ROM, two
timers, one serial port, and 4 ports (8-bit wide), all on a single chip. 8051 is one of the
first most popular microcontrollers also known as MCS-51.

It is an 8-bit microcontroller which means data bus is of 8-bits. Therefore, it can

process 8-bits at a time. It is used in wide variety of embedded systems like robotics,
remote controls, automotive industry, telecom applications, power tools etc.

A microcontroller is a compact integrated circuit designed to govern a specific

operation in an embedded system. A typical microcontroller includes a processor,
memory and input/output (I/O) peripherals on a single chip.

A microcontroller (MCU for microcontroller unit) is a small computer on a single

metal-oxide-semiconductor (MOS) integrated circuit (IC) chip.
A microcontroller contains one or more CPUs (processor cores) along with memory
and programmable input/output peripherals.

EMBEDDED SYSTEMS - 15EE63C 2020-21

A microcontroller is a computer present in a single integrated circuit which is

dedicated to perform one task and execute one specific application.

It contains memory, programmable input/output peripherals as well a processor.

Microcontrollers are mostly designed for embedded applications and are heavily used
in automatically controlled electronic devices such as cellphones, cameras,
microwave ovens, washing machines, etc.

List the applications of Microcontrollers

1. Prepaid energy meter using microcontroller and GSM modem

2. Transformer/Generator health monitoring remotely over internet
3. Power theft detection and intimation to control room using GSM
4. Controlling remote industrial plant using SCADA
5. Avoiding excessive electric bills for industries and commercial establishments
6. Induction motor speed control using Arduino
7. Density based traffic signal system controlled using a smartphone
