Report on Faculty Enrichment Internship Programme (FEIP)

The Faculty Enrichment Internship Programme (FEIP) at IIT Goa for the Odd
Semester of A.Y. 2024-25, an initiative by the Directorate of Higher Education -
Govt. of Goa, was held from 22nd July to 29th November 2024. The internship
provided an enriching experience that offered a unique blend of theoretical and
practical learning. It not only introduced me to the dynamic and inspiring work
culture that makes the IITs the leading academic hub in our country but also
enhanced my teaching, and research skills. Prof. Venkatesh Kamat, Visiting
Professor at the School of Mathematics and Computer Science was the
coordinator on behalf of IIT Goa, who briefed us about the internship on day one.

A key highlight of the program was the opportunity to engage with esteemed
faculty members from the School of Mathematics and Computer Science,
including Dr. Lok Pati Tripathi, Dr. Biplab Paul, Dr. Saurabh Trivedi, and Dr.
Rajiv Gupta. The interactions with them broadened my perspective, deepened my
understanding of ongoing research in Mathematics, and expanded my academic
network. The faculty members were approachable and maintained a warm,
friendly attitude. Equally impactful was my engagement with the research
scholars at IIT Goa, including Mr. Jitendra Nath Naik, Ms. Aditi Tomar, Mr.
Rakesh Kumar, Mr. Soumyadip Dey, and Mr. Debendra Kumar Swain. Their
support during my teaching assistantship was instrumental, and observing their
dedication and perseverance toward research was truly inspiring.

I had the convenience of renting the guest house at Goa Engineering College,
located within the same campus, which significantly reduced travel time as my
residence is fifty kilometers away. This saved time proved invaluable, allowing
me to focus more effectively on my Ph.D. research work. My assigned seating in
the Computer Systems Lab provided a comfortable and conducive working
environment. The central library was easily accessible and well-equipped,
offering an extensive collection of books and e-resources. Additionally, the IIT
hostel mess served delicious meals at an incredibly affordable price, with a
diverse and well-planned menu throughout the week.

Following were the tasks undertaken by me during this internship:

1. Teaching Assistantship for the B.Tech. paper MA101 – Calculus.

I conducted tutorial sessions to support students in understanding

fundamental and advanced concepts of calculus. I also assisted the course
instructors Dr. Saurabh Trivedi and Dr. Biplab Paul with invigilation,
grading assignments and exams. I also addressed students’ doubts, on
campus as well as through email communication. This role not only
strengthened my teaching and mentoring skills but also deepened my grasp
of calculus through revisiting and explaining core concepts. Given the
strong academic background of the students, the questions raised by them
were thought-provoking and intellectually stimulating.

2. Attended the Ph.D. Programme Core Course MA604 - Measure

Theory.

I had the opportunity to attend some highly beneficial B.Tech. and Ph.D.-
level courses in Mathematics, one of them being the course on Measure
Theory. Dr. Lok Pati Tripathi was the course instructor. This course aims
to introduce the student to the concepts of measure theory and integration.
It aims to provide the foundation for advanced-level courses such as
harmonic analysis, advanced differential geometry, the mathematical
foundation for probability, stochastic calculus, and financial mathematics.
Key highlights were the fundamental theorems related to Measure and
Integration, which culminated with the Riesz Representation theorem and
the Radon-Nikodym Theorem.

3. Attended the Ph.D. Programme Core Course MA602 – Functional

Analysis.

The Ph.D.-level course on Functional Analysis was conducted by Dr. Rajiv

Gupta. This course aimed to provide a comprehensive understanding of
functional analysis, the core of which is formed by the study of vector
spaces endowed with inner products, norms, or topologies and the linear
functions defined on these spaces. Key highlights were the fundamental
theorems related to Banach and Hilbert spaces, including the Hahn Banach
Theorem, Baire Category Theorem, Uniform Boundedness Theorem,
Open Mapping Theorem and Closed Graph Theorem. We also explored
weak and weak* topology, Projections and Idempotents, and the Spectral
Theory of Compact Operators.

4. Attended the B.Tech. Course MA302 – Differential Equations II.

This course on Differential Equations was conducted by Dr. Lok Pati

Tripathi. The course helped me revisit the concepts of Power series
solutions, Sturm-Liouville problems, Second-order Partial Differential
Equations and their classification, and solving Laplace, Heat, and Wave
equations, using the Fourier Series and the Method of separation of
variables.
5. Attended the 5-Day Bootcamp on ‘Fundamentals of 5G
Communications – A Drone Perspective’.

This workshop conducted by the Centre for Drone Studies – IIT Goa, from
23rd to 27th October 2024 explored the fundamentals of 5G communication
systems, focusing on their integration with drone technologies. Essential
knowledge with a special focus on Unmanned Aerial Vehicles was
provided. Lectures were engaged on various topics such as Backscatter
UAV Communications, AI Learning Methods, Basics of microcontrollers
and microprocessors for drones, Computer Vision on drones, and
challenges in UAV communications. A lab session on ‘Python for Deep
Learning’ was also conducted. To top it all off, participants were allowed
to fly drones under the supervision of the event coordinators.

6. Delivered a talk on ‘An Introduction to Time Scale Calculus’.

As part of the program, I delivered a talk titled ‘An Introduction to Time

Scale Calculus’, a topic that is related to my ongoing Ph.D. work. Research
Scholars and Faculty members from Mathematics attended the session. The
talk introduced the audience to time-scale calculus, a unifying framework
that bridges discrete and continuous calculus. Basic concepts of time scales
and dynamic equations were discussed. Some applications in the areas of
Physics, Economics, and Medicine were also highlighted. The questions
raised during the talk not only helped deepen my understanding of the topic
but also stimulated ideas for future research that could be carried out.

This holistic exposure made the FEIP an immensely rewarding experience full of
knowledge, insights, and skills that will undoubtedly contribute to my academic
and professional growth. I am thankful to my parent institution Ganpat Parsekar
College of Education, and the Directorate of Higher Education for providing this
wonderful opportunity. My gratitude also goes to our coordinator, Prof.
Venkatesh Kamat, and Dr. Saumya Bajpai, Programme Chair (Mathematics), for
their unwavering support and guidance throughout this internship.
