Aerobytes - Key Features v22
Aerobytes - Key Features v22
Aerobytes FDM
Aerobytes delivers the most fully specified, best supported and easiest to use FDM /
FOQA software available.
All features are included as standard so airlines aren’t forced to compromise simply
because this year’s budget didn’t cover a useful option. There are no hidden extras.
And most importantly, no other competing product is supported so well. Feel free to ask
our customers or even, our competitors’ customers! (Around one in ten systems sold is to
an airline moving from a competing system).
In fact, we’re so confident of our support that it is included free of charge for the first year
and is an option thereafter. This contrasts with most suppliers who will insist on a
minimum, binding contract duration – often of several years…
In addition, six companies around the world use Aerobytes FDM to host the services they
in turn, provide to third-party airlines. In other words, Aerobytes FDM is the tool they
selected to be the backbone of their business.
Many of our clients moved to us from competing products and in the past five years,
almost one half of sales started off as ‘word of mouth’ recommendations from existing (or
former) users of Aerobytes.
So far, the system has been configured to support around 160 different types – including
corporate/regional jets, larger jets, helicopters & turboprops. New types can be added
easily although it is highly likely we already have considerable experience of the types
you operate.
In-House or Service?
Aerobytes is in the happy position of being able to provide in-house solutions (ones you
host and operate) all the way through to full services (which we host and operate on your
behalf). We can also offer additional services for each to help smooth the path.
Best of all, once you have signed up with Aerobytes you have the flexibility to move
seamlessly between these options as your airline’s circumstances evolve.
In contrast, most suppliers can offer only one of these options and so they might push you
to purchase this even if it is not the best fit for your organisation.
Our software itself is fully scalable and is deployed today on everything from standalone
laptops through to large, networked systems supporting hundreds of aircraft/helicopters.
The Service includes a detailed, monthly report. We will be happy to supply a sample
report upon request. Users of the In-House option are able to generate these reports for
themselves.

Product Highlights
To fully appreciate all the features of Aerobytes FDM, you would need to have used it for
many months. However, the following should give you a clear idea of why it is such a
popular and widely used tool. If you’d like to learn more then please request an online
demonstration.
The more important features of the system are listed below. Please remember that
although competing systems may offer some of these features, we have yet to hear of
one that can offer them all as standard:
Highly Automated
Automatic replay (of almost any type of data)
Automatic analysis (with very few false positives)
Automatic report generation
Automatic matching of recorded flights vs scheduled flights
Automatic generation of ECM/EHM, APM & Fuel-Monitoring files
Advanced Analysis
Intelligent re-analysis (faster & does not destroy unrelated results)
Value-led analysis (as opposed to basic, event-only analysis)
Ability to define new events without writing lines of code
Detailed ‘Stable Approach’ analysis (developed with UK/CAA)
Allows external data to be matched with recorded data (via Flown Flights)
RNAV (RNP) analysis (often required by the authorities)
Other Features
Built in 3D animation with terrain and airports worldwide
Drill-down from statistics all the way to the original flight-data
Logging of corrective actions and overlay on statistical reports
SMS Integration
Export to Google Earth / X-Plane / CEFA / FASET
And (again) although the product itself is excellent, the unmatched level of support
provided by Aerobytes plays a major role in our sustained and ongoing success.
allows event detection thresholds to be overridden by t/o or t/d airport/pad, t/o or t/d runway/pad,
engine, aircraft, engine-type, aircraft-type, day/night and/or fleet to improve sensitivity to events
whilst reducing false alarms
supplied pre-configured for your aircraft-types
re-analysis of historical data for new values or events without effecting previous analysis.
An Aerobytes system can automatically carry out the entire process of data replay and analysis
including sending alerts and automatic reports. Aerobytes users spend very little time validating
events and can concentrate on future safety and efficiency.
fully integrated solution allows you to seamlessly switch between all views
all views can be displayed (and exported) as continuous ‘video’
all views support ‘fast load’ whereby only the data immediately surrounding an event is loaded
all views support ‘one click’ selection to quickly view events or parts of a flight
events, key points & values in the flight are clearly marked as they come into view
Each type of view appears on its own tab (and all views are synchronised to the same moment in the flight).
It is also possible to combine any number and type of views into one, configurable ‘big picture’.
Types of View…
3D Animation
new, Cesium view provides integrated, extremely high-quality 3d for no extra cost
legacy view supports overlay of satellite images, SIDS, STARS, etc
synthetic display of runways from built-in database
panels can be overlaid (as below)
note also the ‘signs in the sky’ showing key moments in the data
remember too that you can export to Google Earth, X-Plane & CEFA
the system can also integrate with AIRINC’s FASET animation tool
Panels overlaid on 3d view (Google Earth tile used for airport scenery)
Panels
displays instruments, controls & system-statuses
many types supported (Airbus, Boeing, Embraer plus various others)
a selection of panels is shown below
there are many more built-in, including ones for helicopters
Map
instant positional awareness
events and key points overlaid
Approach
plots path vs glideslope & localiser
shows wind rose
Envelope
plots value vs value (not value vs time)
flap placard, EGT, Vmo, etc
Reports
There is far more to be found in flight-data than just events. With a powerful and truly
flexible reporting engine, you have the power to evaluate trends and statistics that no
other system could ever produce.
Because the underlying software is inherently flexible, there is no need to ‘bolt on’ extras
for complex queries – the system was designed with this in mind from the beginning.
most reports allow you to ‘drill down’ to the flight that created them
you can quickly move from an interesting data-point in a chart to the actual flight
all reports are fully configurable and can be created ad hoc
Useful Extras
Since Aerobytes FDM was originally used in an active airline, it has been regularly
updated to add new features and tools to help reduce workload & frustration for our users.
And of course, all of these extra features are included at no extra cost.
Nearly two decades on and we still don’t feel ‘our work is done’ but we hope you like what
we’ve achieved so far. There is plenty more like this in development…
Flight Manager
This tool quickly filters out the noise so you can focus on a small set of flights. It is a
great time-saver for the FDM user.
please note that the example below does not represent the true operation of the (now defunct)
airline displayed; most of this data was ‘faked’ for testing & to produce a nice image (we can’t use
‘live’ clients or their data for obvious reasons…)
Risk Matrix
Whilst Flight Manager focusses on individual flights, Risk Matrix serves a similar task but
focusses instead on the bigger picture. It can quickly identify frequently occurring or
high risk events.
SMS Integration
Since 2007, Aerobytes has supported true integration with third-party SMS software (the
interface design used by other companies to achieve this today is very likely to be based
on our original, 2007 specification).
Occurrences in the SMS can quickly be associated with Incidents in Aerobytes FDM.
This is a great improvement vs the manual systems that were previously in use (typically
a spreadsheet that mapped an SMS occurrence to an FDM flight).
This data can be automatically extracted and then exported to a range of third-party
products including Sage/Adept, Compass, P&W, Airbus PEP, Boeing APM, ETS Fuel
Saver etc.
Being able to automatically create and export these reports saves a lot of time for FDM
Departments who sometimes found themselves doing more work for other departments
than focussing on their main jobs.
Furthermore, the security model used by Aerobytes FDM allows engineering data to be
shared without compromising the identity of crews or operational events.
Calendar View
The Calendar View displays recorded flights (ones for which you have data) and
scheduled flights (ones that were/will be) flown in a single table.
It can also help spot sensor-degradation (a sudden onset of events for a single aircraft)
This very clever feature that has been at the heart of the system since the start.
It allows your system to automatically import a list of flights that were (or are scheduled
to be) operated. The system can then compare the flight-data it has with this list to let
you know where data might have been lost (c/o Calendar View).
But ‘data capture rates’ are the tip of the iceberg because Flown Flights can also be
used to import other information (things your aircraft doesn’t record) like crew-member
IDs, weather conditions, etc.
This enables your system to analyse information that the actual aircraft itself never
recorded.
If you attend any FDM presentation then somebody will put up a slide that shows a
‘continuous improvement loop’. This involves identifying possible problems, applying
corrective actions and monitoring the effect of those actions.
The problem? Almost no FDM systems actually provide a way to log those corrective
actions let alone a way to monitor their effect.
Fortunately, Aerobytes FDM allows you to create Actions and also to overlay them on
reports so you can monitor their effect.
And any presentation on FDM will also refer endlessly to Events. These are typically
something bad that analysis detected (eg. a hard landing). But sometimes, things
happen that FDM cannot detect or complex situations arise that cannot be tied to a
single event.
This is where Aerobytes’ Incidents come into play because they can be created from an
event or a portion of a flight (even if no events were detected). They go on to form the
essential link with your SMS.
The Future
All software products that have stood the test of time, have one thing in common – they
have evolved in response to customer demand.
Aerobytes FDM is one such product and is continually improving as part of a carefully
managed process.
Historically, well over 70% of new features were produced in direct response to customer
requests. We write and support the software but our users know best what it needs to do
for them.
Aerobytes understands that its reputation and future success hinge upon it listening to
and responding to its clients – not hollow marketing words, but something that is
evidenced by our clients, our products and our support team.
Some of the main reasons cited by aircraft operators for purchasing Aerobytes FOQA
software are:
Ease of use
Automation and Functionality
Excellent Support
Analysis and Visualisation capabilities
Flexibility
SMS software integration
Drill-down allowing users to get from the big picture to individual flights
“I used it in my previous job and it’s still the best”
