In the following a, b are real numbers with a < b.

(1) Let f : [a, b] → R be a function such that 0 ≤ f (x) ≤ 10 for every x in [a, b]. Suppose
the lower Riemann integral of f is strictly positive. Show that there exists δ > 0
and a subinterval [s, t] of [a, b] such that f (x) ≥ δ for every x ∈ [s, t].
(2) Let f : [a, b] → R be Riemann integrable. Show that for > 0 there exists a
partition P such that for every partition P finer than P and every tag t of P ,
Z b
| f − R(P, t, f )| ≤ .
a
(3) Give an example of a bounded function h : [0, 1] → R such that taking equi-partition
En = (0, n1 , n2 , . . . , 1), with tag t = ( n1 , n2 , . . . , nn ), the limit of Riemann sums,
lim R(En , t, h)
n→∞
exists but h is not Riemann integrable.
(4) Give an example of bounded functions f : [a, b] → R and g : [a, b] → R which are
not Riemann integrable but f + g is Riemann integrable.
(5) Let f : [a, b] → R be a bounded function. Define G : [a, b] → R by G(x) equals to
the lower Riemann integral of f restricted to [a, x] (Here G(a) = 0 by definition).
Similarly define H : [a, b] → R as the upper Riemann integral of f restricted to [a, x]
(Here also H(a) = 0.) Show that G, H are Lipschitz continuous.
(6) Let k : [0, 1] ∈ R be the function defined by
1 if x = n1 for some n ∈ N

k(x) =
0 Otherwise.
Determine as to whether k is Riemann integrable or not. If k is Riemann integrable
compute the Riemann integral of k.
(7) Give an example of a bounded Riemann integrable function f : [a, b] → R with
cR ∈ (a, b) such that f is not continuous at c, but F : [a, b] → R defined by F (x) =
x
a f (t)dt is differentiable at c.
(8) Show that

X j2 1
lim ( 3− ) = 0.
n→∞ n 3n
j=1
(Hint: Consider Riemann sums of the function g(x) = x2 − 31 , x ∈ [0, 1]. This way
integration theory provides a method of computing some limits.)
(9) Let f : [a, b] → R be a continuous function. Define R : [a, b] → R by
Z b
R(x) = f (t)dt, x ∈ [a, b),
x
and R(b) = 0. Show that R is differentiable. Compute the derivative of R.
(10) Suppose f : [a, b] → R is a continuous function. Show that there exists t ∈ (a, b)
such that Z b
1
f (t) = . f (x)dx.
(b − a) a
Show that similar result may not hold if f is not a continuous function.
