Department of Education
REGION IV-A CALABARZON
SCHOOLS DIVISION OF BATANGAS PROVINCE
STA MESA ELEMENTARY SCHOOL
STA MESA, MABINI, BATANGAS
The Department of Education together with the Department of Health introduced the
Healthy learning institution (HLI) which aims to strengthen school health and nutrition programs.
Sta. Mesa Elementary School was one of the schools that was given a chance to be involved in HLI
lectures. Day one of the health lectures, the learners was establish key topics concerning
adolescence, early pregnancy, and the physical changes in both boys' and girls' bodies. The goal of
the session was to provide foundational knowledge on the physiological and emotional
transformations that adolescents undergo, to raise awareness about early pregnancy, and to create
an open space for discussions about these important health issues. They engaged actively through
discussions, activities, and reflections, setting the lecture for deeper exploration in subsequent
classes.
The day began with an introduction to the theme of adolescence, where Ms. Magmanlac
and Ms. Aldovino RHU Nurse Representatives explained how this stage marks a period of significant
physical, emotional, and psychological changes. She highlighted that adolescence typically begins
with puberty and lasts until the individual reaches adulthood and the session was more on
understanding the physical transformations that take place during this phase and the implications
these changes have for the health and well-being of adolescents.
The lecture was so light and engaging as Ms. Lady Marilyn A. Magmanlac, Registered Nurse
from RHU Mabini shared her knowledge with such joy and jolliness. She discussed the onset of
puberty and explained how hormones trigger a series of developments in the body. The class also
discussed the emotional and psychological impact of these changes. She explained how these
physical transformations could affect self-esteem and body image, and how peer pressure or societal
expectations can influence how adolescents perceive themselves during this period. The second
segment addressed early pregnancy discussed by Ms. Lourdes Paulita S. Aldovino, emphasizing the
risks and challenges associated with pregnancy during adolescence, including the potential physical
and emotional challenges adolescents may face if they become pregnant, such as complications
during delivery, health risks, and the emotional toll of managing pregnancy at a young age. The
lecture ended focusing on maintaining good health during adolescence. Learners were encouraged
to develop healthy habits, including proper nutrition, regular physical activity, and mental health
care. The class discussed how maintaining good health during adolescence can help adolescents
cope with physical changes and navigate emotional struggles, such as stress and peer pressure.
