Fifteen toddlers running around in a gymnastics gym, coaches need assistance, as
expected. We recently enrolled our toddler son into a tipsy tots gymnastics class. Upon enrolling,
it was asked if there was any interest in helping during the class. I have grown fond of watching
our older daughter do gymnastics, so I thought I would volunteer to help. I have volunteered a
few sessions during his ten-week course. I thought this would be a great opportunity to get
involved in his first structured activity. I think it is important to volunteer and help at our
children’s activities, as it can get hectic, and the small children need help on some of the more
difficult activities. We have enjoyed watching our older daughter during her class and our son
was very interested in joining as well. I did notice some parents helping in the younger children’s
classes and observed that with the help, the classes went smoother.

I started volunteering during his first class and have been ever since. The class consists of
stretching and warming up. This is a fun time to be with him. He gets to jump around and dance
to warm up. I enjoy this time because the volunteers participate in this portion of the class and
can move their bodies as well. He has learned many different gymnastics shapes. He is loving to
show us what he has learned, so I find it beneficial to be with him in his class so I can ask him to
show us what he has learned and different shapes. After stretching is complete, we move onto the
first of four stations. The stations are floor, beam, bars, and tumble track. The floor station is
utilizing their muscles to jump, practice handstands, and practice stopping their bodies. I find I
am helpful here to assist with the stopping. The beam station is many balance beams that they
balance on and there are also some trampolines to jump on. The other station is bars. This station
is when I find myself assisting a lot. They need help to get on the bar and to be safe. I have found
our son has gotten very strong on the bars. Lastly, the tumble track. This is a long trampoline that
they jump on and at the end jump into a foam pit, it is by far their favorite part.

I greatly enjoy volunteering for his class. I have found that we can be together, but it is
also beneficial to demonstrate to him that I am also there to help other kids. I have also found
that the more I volunteer and show that it is enjoyable, more of the other parents have started to
join in on volunteering. I learned that I need to have patience during my time in the class. I am
thankfully not the coach and facilitating the instructions, but I do sometimes feel that we are
reminding the children often to focus and work on their skills. I was skeptical about volunteering
as I do not have any gymnastics background, but I was informed that it is not helping teach, it is
more about keeping the kids on track. This is a fun volunteer opportunity, and I look forward to
helping more in the future.
