Week 11 - Virtual Work Method for Frames and Trusses Module
Week 11 Note:
When the resulting answer is negative, it means that the
Virtual Work Method for Frames and Trusses assumed 1-unit loading / couple direction is incorrect.
Intended Learning Outcome: Truss:
• To utilize the concept of work in solving for the Displacement:
rotation and displacement of frames and trusses.
• To determine the slope and deflection of frames using
Virtual Work Method.
• To determine the horizontal and vertical displacement
of trusses using Virtual Work Method.
Virtual Work Method
• Developed by John Bernoulli in 1717
• It is also called as the Unit-Load Method
• It provides a general means of obtaining the
displacement and slope at a specific point on a
structure, be it a beam, frame, or truss
Sign Convention:
Tension – Positive
Compression – Negative
Note:
Frames:
When the resulting answer is negative, it means that the
Deflection:
assumed 1- unit loading direction is incorrect.
Procedure:
• Place the unit load on the truss at the joint where the
desired displacement is to be determined. The load
Slope: should be the same direction as the displacement,
e.g., horizontal or vertical.
• Get the all the member forces of the truss based on
the 1-unit load.
• Get the all the member forces of the truss based on
real loads.
• Plug in the answer on the formula and get the
summation.
Displacement:
