Assighnment on Chapter 1,2,3 and 4
1. Discuss the meanings of Fluid Power with its classification. Give at least 3 practical
application of fluid power.
2. What is the difference between positive displacement and dynamic pumps? Explain briefly.
3. Find the offset angle for an axial piston pump with six pistons arranged in a circular diameter
of 150mm and delivers 0.00185m3/s at 350rpm. Take the volumetric efficiency of the pump
to be 96%.
4. The hydraulic system operates 12 hours per day for 250 days per year. The cost of electricity
is Birr 0.40 per KWh. If the overall efficiency of the electric motor is 85%, determine
a. The yearly cost of electricity to operate the hydraulic system
b. The amount of yearly cost of electricity that is due to inefficiencies of the
electric motor and pump.
5. A hydraulic motor powers a conveyor on a harvesting machine. Oil flows in a 488 cm
hydraulic hose from the pump to the motor. The oil properties are Sg = 0.9 and ν = 36.5cS.
Flow rate is Q = 56.7812 lpm, and the hose inside diameter is 19.05 mm. What is the
pressure drop between the pump and motor?
6. A pressure relief valve contains a poppet with a 4.20 cm2 area on which system pressure acts.
During assembly, a spring with spring constant of 3200 N/cm is installed in the valve to hold
the poppet against its seat. In order to pass full pump flow through the valve at the PRV
pressure setting, the poppet must move 0.3 cm from its fully closed position. What should be
the initial compression of the spring in the PRV if the full pump flow pressure is to be 40%
greater than the cracking pressure?
7. The system shown in the figure below has the following data:
Pressure = 1 bar
Drum radius = 0.3 m
Motor speed = 30 rpm
Weight of load = 4000 N
Determine the flow-rate in units of m3/s and the output power of the 100% efficient
motor in KW.
8. A hydraulic cushioning device has a 5 cm bore and a 1.9 cm cylinder rod. If the fluid on the
rod end of the cylinder increases in pressure because of absorbing a total deceleration force
of 26.7 KN, what is the pressure generated.
9. A hydraulic pump drives a hydraulic motor supplying 3.7 kW at 500 rpm to a machine. The
pump delivery pressure is 52 bar and there is a pressure drop of 0.4 bar in the lines joining
the pump to the motor. Assuming volumetric efficiencies of 90 percent and mechanical
efficiencies of 90 percent for both pump and motor, determine:
a. The displacement of the motor
b. The delivery rate of the pump
c. The power required to drive the pump
