Computers and

Mobile Devices
Evaluating Options for Home and
Work

1
Computers and Mobile Devices
As Chapter 1 discussed, a computer
is an electronic device.

Process data according to specified

rules, produce information, and
store the information for future use.

A mobile device is a computing

device small enough to hold in your
hand.

Mobile Computers and Desktops
A mobile computer is a portable
personal computer, such as a laptop
or tablet.

A user easily can carry mobile

computer from place to place.

Desktop is designed to be in a
stationary location.

4
Mobile Computers and Desktops
 PC is a mobile computer or desktop
that can perform all activities.

 Activities: Input, processing, output,

and storage.

 Intended to be used by one person

at a time.
 The term PC sometimes is used to
describe a computer that runs a
Windows operating system.
5
Desktop Computers

6
Mobile Computers and Desktops
 PCs often are differentiated by the
type of operating system they use.

 Leading the market share: Windows

and Mac operating systems.

 Companies such as Acer, Dell, Lenovo,

HP, and Samsung sell PC that use the
Windows operating system.

 Apple sells PCs that use the Mac.

7
Mobile Computers and Desktops
 A laptop is a lightweight computer,
Powerful as the average desktop.

 Designed to fit on your lap and for

easy transport.

 Laptops have input devices, such as a

keyboard, and webcam; output
devices, such as a screen and
speakers.

8
Cloud Computing
 Cloud computing is an environment
that provides resources and services
accessed via the Internet.

 Resources include email messages,

schedules, music, photos, videos,
websites, apps, and more.

 Services include accessing software,

storing files online.

10
Ports and Connections
 Computers and mobile devices connect
to peripheral devices through ports
or by using wireless technologies.

 A port is the point at which a peripheral

device attaches to a computer or mobile
device.

 The peripheral device can send data

to or receive information from the
computer or mobile device.
11
Ports and Connections
 Most devices have ports so that you can
connect the computer or device to
peripherals.

12
Popular Ports and Connectors

13
USB Ports
A USB port (universal serial bus port)
can connect up to 127 different
peripheral devices together with a
single connector.

 Devices that connect to a USB port

include digital camera, external hard
drive, mouse and printer.

 You find USB ports in vehicles, airplane

seats, and other public locations.
14
Wireless Device Connections
Instead of connecting devices to
peripheral devices with a cable,
some devices use wireless such as
Bluetooth, Wi-Fi and NFC .

Bluetooth technology uses short-

range radio signals to transmit
data between two Bluetooth enabled
computers or devices.

15
Wireless Device Connections
Wi-Fi (wireless fidelity) uses radio
signals that conform to 802.11
standards, which were developed by
the Institute of Electrical and
Electronics Engineers (IEEE).

Most mobile computers and devices

are Wi-Fi enabled, along with other
communications devices.

16
Wireless Device Connections
NFC(near field communications) uses
close-range radio signals to transmit
data.
Examples of NFC-enabled devices
include smartphones, digital cameras
,computers and more.

For successful communications, the

devices either touch or are within
an inch or two of each other.
