Functions Practice Questions
1. The domain of h(x) = is {2, - 3, 5, - 7, 9}, find the range.
2. The range of g(x) = is {-1, -3, -5, 2, 4, 6}, find the domain.
3. For the domain – 3 ≤ x ≤ 3, sketch the graph of y = |[x]|, where [x] means the greatest
integer less than or equal to x (for example, [3.4] = 3, [-3.4] = - 4 etc.). State the range of
this function for this domain.
4. Determine whether the following functions are implicit or explicit. If it is implicit change
them to explicit.
a) y = 3x – 3 c) x2y = x + y, x ≠ ± 1
b) y = 4x2 + 7x + 9 d) √ +3=x+1
5. Determine whether f is even, odd or neither even nor odd:
a) f(x) = 3x2 + 2 c) f(x) = x3 + 2x
b) f(x) = x5 d) f(x) = x3 + 2x2
6. If (f-1. g-1)(x) = 3x + 2 and g-1 (x) = 5x – 4, find (g.f)(x) and g(x).
7. If f(x) = √ , x ≥ 2, show that (f-1)-1(x) = f(x).
8. If the function h(x) =
a) Find h3(x) c) Find h-1 (0.5)
b) Find h-1 (x) d) Solve the equation h-1 (x) = 2
9. The function f(x) and g(x) are defined as f(x) = and g(x) = respectively.
Find similarly
a) f[g(x)]
b) g[f(x)]
c) g -1[f(x)]
d) g[f -1 (x)]
e) f -1[g -1(x)]

In each case above, state the values of x which must be excluded from the domain.

f) For what values of x is g -1[f(x)] = f -1[g -1(x)]

g) Show that {g[f(x)]}-1 = f -1[g -1(x)]
10. If f(x) = - 3 and g(x) = ,
a) Solve the equation f(x) = g(x).
b) Show that {g[f(x)]}-1 = f -1[g -1(x)]
11. If g(x) = (x ≠ 2) find the values of a if g2(–1) + 2g -1(–1) = –3.
