Assignment 0 -MSO 203 M

September 22, 2023

Problem 0: Recall your concepts on concepts on series convergence. Show

that the following series

X 1
n=0
(2n + 1)2
is convergent.
Note: Till now you have learnt to show, using various tests/ methods,
whether a series is convergent / divergent. If a certain series converges, you
have not learnt many ways to find out, to which point does it converges. In this
course (as an application of the concept of Fourier series) you will learn to find
the sum of the many series (in particular the above one as well).
Solution: One can simply use comparison theorem with
X
1/n2 .

Problem 1: Let a < b and X denotes the set of all real valued solution of
the following problem:

x′′ (t) + p(t)x′ (t) + q(t)x(t) = 0

where p and q are continuous functions defined on (a, b). Show that X is a
vector space over real numbers.
Solution: If f, g ∈ X, then clearly f + g ∈ X. The function f (x) = 0 is
the identity element. Similarly all the other properties of vector space can be
checked directly.
Problem 2: Recall the concept of directional derivatives, partial deriva-
tives, total derivatives for a function of several variables.
Solution: Refer to your MTH 101 notes.
Problem 3: Recall the theorem that provides the criterion for Total deriva-
tive to exit. Recall the statement of mixed derivative theorem.
Solution: Refer to your MTH 101 notes.
Problem 4: Recall the concept of the change of variable formula for function
of several variable and its application to polar coordinate system, spherical
coordinate system (as done in MTH 101).

1
Solution: Refer to your MTH 101 notes.
Problem 5: Find the general solution of the following problem:
′′
1. y (t) + 4y(t) = 0,
′′ ′
2. y (t) + 2y (t) + y(t) = 0,
′′
3. y (t) − 4y(t) = 0,
′′ ′
4. y (t) − 5y (t) + 4y(t) = 0.

Solution Hint:

(a) x(t) = A cos(2t) + B sin( 2t).
(b) x(t) = Aet + Btet
(c) x(t) = Ae2t + Be−2t
(d) x(t) = Ae4t + Bet .
Problem 6: For a function u which is differentiable on R2 . Recall the proof
of the formula
∂u
(x) = ∇u(x) · ν,
∂ν
where ν is a vector with unit norm.
Solution: Refer to your MTH 101 notes.
