Internet Services

WHAT ARE INTERNET SERVICES ?

Internet services typically provided by ISPs(Internet

Service Providers) can include Internet access,
Internet transit, domain name registration, web
hosting, Usenet service, and colocation. An ISP
typically serves as the access point or the gateway
that provides a user to access everything available
on the Internet.

 EXAMPLES OF INTERNET SERVICES :

 DSL (digital subscriber line)

 cable broadband
 fibre optic broadband
 wireless or Wi-Fi broadband
 satellite and mobile broadband
 dedicated leased line

DSL (Digital Subscriber Line)

When you connect to the internet you might
connect through a regular modem , through a local
area network connection in your office through a
cable modem or through a digital subscriber line
(DSL) connection. DSL is a very high speed
connection that uses the same wire connections as
a regular telephone line.
Advantages of a DSL ( Digital Subscriber Line)
 You can leave your internet connection on and
still use the phone line for voice calls.
 The speed is much hire than a regular modem.
 DSL doesn’t necessarily require new writing. It
can use the phone line you already have.
 The company that offers DSL will usually
provide the modem as part of the installation.

Disadvantages
 A DSL connection works better when you are
closer to the provider’s central office. The
farther away you get from the central office,
the weaker the signal becomes.
 The connection is faster for receiving data than
it is for sending data over the internet.
 The service is not available everywhere.

Cable broadband

Cable modems are a prevalent type of hardware

that connects computer devices with your ISP.
Differing from other types of modems, a cable
modem uses coax cable, the same infrastructure
that brings television programming to our business
or homes, to proxy that connection, rather than a
telephone or DSL line.

Advantages of a cable broadband

 Cable modems offer faster Internet speeds that

DSL satellite, dial-up and satellite connections.
 Cable modems speed up downloading and
uploading large files
 Cable modems aren’t affected by dropping out
or lose connection as frequently as dial-up
connections
 Cable modems provide a better online gaming
experiences to gamers.

Disadvantages

 They have slower Internet speeds compared to

fiber-optic Internet. The speed of your Internet
connection will also be contingent on how
many connections are connected to it in your
region. The speed of the Internet can be slower
during peak hours when many users are
concurrently using it.
 Cable modem connections require that you pay
hefty fees for quarterly, monthly or annual
services.
 There are no cable modem connections
available in all areas.

These are just a few of cable modem advantages

and disadvantages. Cable modems are easy and
simple to set

 up at home. Although they do have a few

negatives, their benefits are far more
substantial. Cable modems provide satisfactory
speed, reliable connections, and quality
services in most instances.
Fiber optic broadband

Fiber-optic internet, commonly called fiber internet

or simply “fiber,” is a broadband connection that
can reach speeds of up to 940 Megabits per second
(Mbps), with low lag time. The technology uses
fiber-optic cable, which amazingly can send data as
fast as about 70% the speed of light.
Advantages of a fiber optic broadband

 Upload/Download Speed
 Distance
 Security
 Reliability
 Cable Size
 Cost
 It’s Sturdier
BaBandwidth

Disadvantages

 As fiber is lighter and thinner than another

metal wiring, it's important to note that it is
prone to physical damage. Fiber optic cables
are easy to cut accidentally when building
renovations are going on, and even just one
cut cable can be disruptive. It's important to
note this before installation so that you can
mark where the wires are for the future.
 The costs of fiber optics are lower over the long
term, but they are still expensive to install. You
need to have specialist equipment to check all
is working as it should, and you also need to
have the right worker on hand to set up the
fiber optics equipment for you. This can cost
more than you expect and so it can help to be
aware of what you need to include in your
budget.
 When too much light is pulsed through the
wires and meets with an imperfection in the
glass fibers, a fiber fuse occurs. This can
destroy cables in a very short amount of time.
 There are excellent reasons to get fiber optics,
but one disadvantage is in the fact that it can
only propagate light in one direction. When this
happens, data and communication can only
move in one direction, so you need to lay more
than one cable to achieve information going
both ways.
