Topic A:
● Exploring policies for the inclusion of transgender women in women’s Olympic
events.
The inclusion of transgender women in women’s Olympic events has become a prominent
and complex issue within the realm of international sports. As society evolves in its
understanding of gender identity and rights, there is growing attention on how to best ensure
fair competition while promoting inclusivity for transgender athletes. Although gender parity
in participation has been achieved, transgender people face exclusion and discrimination.
In the Paris 2024 Olympic Games, no transgender women participated, but a trans man in
boxing and at least two non-binary people did participate for the first time. This reflects the
complexity of the issue and the need for clear and fair policies. Some athletes and coaches
have expressed their opposition to the participation of trans women in women's competitions,
arguing that it could affect equity and safety. However, there are also those who defend
inclusion and respect for gender identity.
As for Chile, there wasn’t any specific information on the participation of transgender women
in Olympic sports. However, it is important to note that the International Athletics Federation
has established policies for the participation of transgender athletes, which include hormonal
and gender identity requirements.
It is essential to consider diversity and inclusion in sports, and work towards policies that
respect gender identity and promote equity and justice for all female athletes.
For this, as representative of The Republic of Chile I propose the following strategies to
achieve this:
● Clear Standards for Testing and Monitoring: Create a standardized, transparent
process for monitoring testosterone levels and other relevant factors, ensuring fairness
across all competitions and providing clear guidelines for athletes.
● Pilot Programs: Introduce pilot programs in selected sports to test the impact of
transgender inclusion and assess fairness before broad implementation.
● Independent Oversight Body: Create an independent committee within the IOC to
oversee the implementation of transgender inclusion policies and ensure that they are
being enforced equitably and fairly.
● Flexible Policies for Different Sports: Recognize that the impact of gender
transition may vary across sports and allow for sport-specific policies to ensure
fairness while maintaining inclusivity.
● Clear and Consistent Guidelines: Develop clear, transparent guidelines for the
inclusion of transgender athletes in Olympic events, ensuring consistency and
fairness.
