Hydropower Engineering
Submission Due Date: November 28, 2024 G.C. [Thursday Morning]
1. In an electrical district the followings are some of the different kinds of demand:
• Domestic = 3MW
• Irrigation = 5MW
• Water supply = 2MW
• Industries =? Peak Load (LP)
• Offices = 2MW and public utilities = 4MW
Calculate the required installed capacity of power station. Assume 15% as loss and 25% of
capacity as reserve. Assume diversity factor as 1.5.
2. The following is the record of average yearly flow (m3/s) in a river for 15 years. If the available
head is 15m, construct the FDC and PDC for the river.
Year Flow
2000 905
2001 865
2002 1050
2003 1105
2004 675
2005 715
2006 850
2007 775
2008 590
2009 625
2010 810
2011 885
2012 1025
2013 1150
2014 925
3. Calculate the capacity factor of the hydropower plant having the following data: discharge Q =
50 m³/s, head H = 5m, Operation hour = 7,000hr./yr. & Overall efficiency = 0.8
4. A Run-off-River [ROR] plant is to be constructed across a river at a site where a net head of
22m is available in the turbine. The river carries a sustained minimum flow of 26m3/s as dry
water flow. Behind the power station, sufficient water pondage has been provided to supply
daily peak load of demand with a load factor of 70%. Assuming the plant efficiency of 58%.
Determine:
A. Maximum generating capacity of generator to be installed at the powerhouse?
B. Volume of pondage to be provided to supply daily demand, assuming that daily
load pattern consists of average load for 21hr. and off-peak load for 3hr.
5. Consider the yearly load duration curve for a certain load center to be a straight line from 20
to 3MW. To meet this load, three hydropower units, two rated at 10MW each and one at 5MW
are installed.
Determine:
A. Load factor (LF)
B. Capacity factor (CF)
C. Utilization factor (UF)
6. The following data are obtained from the records of the mean monthly flows of a river for 10
years. The head available at the site of the power plant is 60m and the plant efficiency is 80%.
