B. EXPLORE
Read/watch or research for a certain news that talks about unethical behavior in business.
Explore the reason behind why it is considered unethical.
In 2015, Volkswagen, a prominent global automaker, was embroiled in a significant scandal
involving the deliberate manipulation of emissions testing for diesel vehicles. The company
installed software, known as a "defeat device," in millions of cars worldwide. This software
detected when vehicles were undergoing emissions testing and adjusted the engine's
performance to meet regulatory standards. However, during normal driving conditions, the
vehicles emitted significantly higher levels of nitrogen oxide (NOx), a harmful pollutant.
2. The excessive emissions of NOx pose serious health risks, including respiratory problems,
heart disease, and increased mortality rates. By knowingly releasing harmful pollutants into
the environment, Volkswagen put public health at risk.
3. The scandal severely damaged Volkswagen's reputation and eroded public trust in the
company. Customers felt betrayed, as they had purchased vehicles based on false claims of
environmental friendliness.

C. EXPLAIN
Last year, McDonald’s Philippines announced that they will start to hire senior citizens and
persons with disability in 40 of their stores located in Manila. According to the news, the
company will deploy them as either order presenters, drink drawers, table managers and
guest relations staff. The netizens have different reactions in the news, some says it is a
good step for McDonalds to welcome the Senior Citizens and PWD’s to have equal
opportunity to work while others view it negatively as they could be prone to harassment
and other overwork. If you are about to build your own company, would you consider doing
the same thing that McDonald’s did? Why? Why not? Explain your answer.
If I were to start up my own company, I would definitely mimic McDonald's Philippines' move of
hiring senior citizens and PWDs. Diversity in the workplace is not only the ethical thing to do, but it
also benefits the organization. Elderly people and PWDs bring several years of experience, unique
perspectives, and work dedication into the company culture and performance. By providing equal
opportunities, the company can also fulfill its social responsibility, creating a positive impact on the
community.
However, it has to consider possible grounds for complaints on harassment and overwork.
Measures can be taken to alleviate such effects, though - possibly through policies and support
systems that are quite strong. Wide-ranging training programs for inclusion and respectful attitude,
as well as a comprehensive monitoring system, may ensure a safe environment without fear or
harassment at work. Flexible working hours and reasonable adjustments might also be
considerations for them and boost job satisfaction and productivity.
In conclusion, a benefit far outweighs the drawbacks as hiring senior citizens and PWDs benefits
when their working backs are addressed. It is all about the core values of equity and inclusion, such
that it makes an organization rich in diversity, dynamic, and socially responsible.

D. ELABORATE
1. One of your teammates emailed you an inappropriate joke which you find very
offensive, but you do not know if you should approach your co-worker with your
concern. What should you do?
When I receive an offensive joke from my teammate or co-worker, it's important to handle the
situation thoughtfully. First, I will evaluate my feelings and understand why the joke was offensive to
me. Next, I'll consider addressing the issue directly with my co-worker in a private and respectful
manner, explaining how the joke affected me. If I'm uncomfortable doing this or if the behavior
continues, I will consult the company's HR department for guidance. Document the incident to
ensure I have a record. By addressing the situation appropriately, I'll contribute to fostering a
respectful and inclusive work environment.
2. The coffee shop you are working with had a very busy day to the extent that your
job as a barista which includes some cleaning of the store was a problem to you.
You find a hard time finding an available time due to the influx of customers in the
counter. Your manager told you and the rest of the team that if you didn’t complete
all the tasks before you punch out, you have to stay until the job gets done (without
extra pay). Is this ethical or not? What are the grounds? Elaborate your answer.
Requiring employees to stay late without extra pay is unethical. Fair compensation is a
fundamental principle, and asking staff to work overtime without pay violates this principle. It
disregards labor laws, which mandate payment for all hours worked, including overtime.
Additionally, such practices can lead to employee burnout and lower morale, impacting overall
productivity and well-being. Ethical management should ensure tasks are manageable within
scheduled hours and provide proper compensation for additional work. Creating a fair and
supportive work environment is essential for maintaining a motivated and dedicated workforce,
aligned with ethical labor practices.
