QUADRATIC INEQUALITY
- It is a polynomial of degree 2 that can be written in the form ax 2 + bx + c < 0 where a,
b, and c are real numbers and a ≠ 0. Symbols >, ≤ and ≥ may also be used in place of
<.
EXAMPLE OF QUADRATIC INEQUALITY
• 𝒙𝟐 + 𝟓𝒙 + 𝟔 > 𝟎
• 𝒙𝟐 + 𝟓𝒙 + 𝟔 < 𝟎
• 𝒙𝟐 + 𝟓𝒙 + 𝟔 ≥ 𝟎
• 𝒙𝟐 + 𝟓𝒙 + 𝟔 ≤ 𝟎
Interval notation - is a way of writing the solution set of quadratic inequality
Three-point test method - method used to test the point that would satisfy the inequality
and determine the shaded region which represents the solution set of the quadratic inequality
HOW TO CHECK IF THE value of x BELONG TO THE SOLUTION SET?
- Substituting the given value to the inequality. If the given value satisfies the
inequality, it means the given value belongs to the solution set.
Example:
𝒙𝟐 + 𝟓𝒙 + 𝟔 > 𝟎 𝒙 = −𝟑
𝟐
(−𝟑) + 𝟓(−𝟑) + 𝟔 > 𝟎
𝟗 − 𝟏𝟓 + 𝟔 > 𝟎
−𝟔 + 𝟔 > 𝟎
𝟎 > 𝟎 False, it means that -3 is not part of the solution set
QUADRATIC FUNCTION
- functions that can be described by equations of the form y = ax^2 + bx + c, where, a,
b, and c are real numbers and a ≠ 0. The highest power of the independent variable x
is 2. Thus, the equation of a quadratic function is of degree 2.
Example of Quadratic Function
• 𝑦 = 𝑥2
• 𝑦 = 3 − 𝑥2
• 𝑦 = 4𝑥 2 − 5
Example of Quadratic Function in real-life
• Shooting a ball
• Diving from a platform
• Hitting a golf
Graph of Quadratic Function Graph of Linear Function
Table of Values of Linear and Quadratic Function
GRAPH OF QUADRATIC FUNCTION
• PARABOLA – graph of quadratic function
• VERTEX (h, k) – turning point of the graph
HOW TO FIND THE VERTEX (h,k) of the quadratic function
❖ Given the vertex form of the Quadratic Function
❖ Given the graph of the quadratic Function
❖ Given the standard form of the quadratic function
• Opening of the Graph
- If the value of a is positive(a>0), the graph opens upward
- If the value of a is negative(a<0), the graph opens downward
• Equation of axis of symmetry
- The line that divides the graph into 2 equal parts
𝑥=ℎ
• Domain
- Set of all real numbers
• Range
- If it opens upward, the range is the set {y : y ≥ k}
- if it opens downward, the range is the set {y : y ≤ k}
Effect of a, h and k to the graph of Quadratic Function
• Value of a
- In the graph of y = ax2 + bx + c, the larger the |a| is, the narrower is the graph.
- In the graph of y = ax2 + bx + c, the smaller the |a| is, the broader is the graph.
• Value of h
- If h > 0 (positive), slide it to the right
- if h < 0 (negative), slide it to the left
• Value of k
- If k > 0 (positive) slide it upward
- if k < 0 (negative) , slide it downward.
Describing the graph of the Quadratic Function
• 𝒚 = 𝟑(𝒙 + 𝟓)𝟐 − 𝟏𝟐
- The graph of 3𝑥 2 is shifted 5 units to the left and 12 units downward
• 𝒚 = −𝟓𝒙𝟐 + 𝟖
- The graph of −5𝑥 2 is shifted 8 units upward
• the graph of y = x2 is shifted 4 units up and 6 units to the right
- 𝒚 = (𝒙 − 𝟒 )𝟐 + 𝟔
Solving for the value of y of quadratic function
𝒚 = 𝒙𝟐 + 𝟔𝒙 + 𝟗 ; 𝒙 = 𝟑
= (𝟑 )𝟐 + 𝟔(𝟑) + 𝟗
= 𝟗 + 𝟏𝟖 + 𝟗
𝒚 = 𝟑𝟔
