Google Docs

Google Documents (Google docs) is an online document creation and sharing service which
allows users to create word processing documents, spreadsheets, presentations, forms,
among others things, online without the need for software on the user's computer. Its
ability to read and convert standard file formats, such as DOC, XLS, PPT, RTF, CSV, etc, make
it simple for users to edit and collaborate online while files are all stored on the web.
Users can easily create a free Google account at http://docs.google.com/ before they can
access Google Docs.

Using Google Documents

Google Documents (Google Docs) is a web location where you use web‐based
applications to create and easily share documents. You can also upload documents of
certain file types.

Access to Google Documents is only available with a Google login (look under the
‘more’ menu on Google’s home page at www.google.com ). This is different from a
MyUWSAccount and is unsupported by the ITS and E‐Learning Service Desks.
Available document types are:
Document – similar to Microsoft Word
Presentation – similar to Microsoft PowerPoint
Spreadsheet – similar to Microsoft Excel
Form – similar to Microsoft InfoPath
Folder – to organise documents and forms.
Standard editing functions are available using well‐established icon tool selectors, so
the program is intuitive and easy to use. A range of document templates is available for
all document types. Students can also create their own templates to use or share.
Each document has a unique revision history, showing who has changed the document
at each iteration. This can be helpful when assessing contributions to a group task.
Documents can also be exported or downloaded in editable formats (MS Office or
Open Office) or as PDF or text, allowing for backup and offline editing if required.
Documents created in Open Office, MS Office or PDF format can also be uploaded to
Google Docs, and if editable, edited online. Uploaded documents can be shared in the
same way as documents created online.
Your class should create their Google logins before you create a group if possible.
