ASSINGMENT - 1

What is Operating System?


An Operating System (OS) is system software that manages computer hardware and
software resources and provides common services for computer programs. All
computer programs excluding firmware require an operating system to function.

Types of Operating Systems:

1) Command Line Operating System


i) DOS
ii) UNIX

2) Icon Line Operating System


i) Windows
ii) Mac
iii) Lynx

3) Mobile Operating System


i) Android
ii) i-os
iii) Windows

1) COMMAND LINE OPERATING SYSTEM

A Command line (OS) is also known as Command line user interface. It means
of interacting with a computer program where the user issues commands to the
program in the form of successive lines of text. A program which handles the interface
is called a command line operating system.

i) DOS: - (Disk Operating System)

A disk Operating System (DOS) is a Computer operating system that can use a
disk storage device such as a floppy disk, hard disk drive (or) optical disk. A disk
operating system must provide a file system for organizing, reading and writing files
on the storage disk.
Disk operating systems were available for main frames, microprocessors and
home computers and were usually loaded from the disks themselves as part of the boot
process.

VERSIONS: -
86-DOS, PC-DOS, MS-DOS, DR-DOS, IBM-DOS.
ii) UNIX:-

Unix is a family of multi tasking, multi user computer operating systems that
derive from the original AT&T unix, development started in the 1970’s at the Bell
Labs.

VERSIONS:-

BSD, 386BSD, Free BSD, Net BSD, Open BSD, MINIX, Plan 9, QNX.

2) ICON LINE OPERATING SYSTEM

i) WINDOWS

Microsoft windows (or) simply windows is a Meta family of graphical


operating system developed, marketed and sold by Microsoft.

It consists of several families of operating systems each of which cater to a certain sector of
the computing industry with the OS typically associated with IBM pc compatible architecture.
Active windows families include Windows NT and windows embedded these may en-compass
sub-families.
Eg: - Windows Embedded Compact (or) Windows Servers

VERSIONS: -
Windows 98, Windows 2000, Windows 95, Windows XP, Windows XP Professional
X 64, Windows Vista, Windows 7, Windows 8, Windows 10.

ii) MAC: - (Macintosh Operating Systems)

The family of Macintosh operating systems developed by Apple INC. includes the
graphical user interface – based operating systems it has designed for use with its Macintosh
series of personal computers Since 1984, as well as the related systems software it once
created for compatible third – party system.

The current mac operating system in mac os, originally named “ mac osx”.

VERSIONS :-
System(1,6,7), Mac os (8,9), Mac OSX (10, 10.1, 10.2) (Panther, Tiger, Leopard,
Snow leopard, Lion)
OSX (Mountain Lion, Mavericks, Yosemite, EI Capitan)

iii) LYNX: The lynx os is as Unix like real time operating system from lynx software technologies
(formerly “lynx works). Some times known as the lynx operating system. Lynx os features as the
lynx operating system lynx os features full POSIX conformance and more recently, Linux
compatibility lynx os is mostly used in real time embedded systems in applications for avionics,
aerospace the military industrial process control and telecommunications.

VERSIONS OF LYNX: Linux (0.1,1.0,1.2,2.2,2.6,3.x,)

III Mobile operating systems:


(i) Android:
Android is a mobile operating developed by Google based on the Linux kernel and
designed primarily for touch screen mobile devices such as smart phones and
tablets.
Variants of Android are also on game consoles, digital cameras, PC’s and other
electronics.
Android user interface is mainly based on direct manipulation using touch gestures
that loosely correspond to real world actions, such as swiping, tapping and pinching
to manipulate on screen objects along with a virtual keyboard for text inputs. In
addition to touch screen device. Google has further developed Android TV for
televisions, Android Auto for cars and Android wear for wrist watches each with a
specialized user interface.

VERSIONS: - Cupcake (1.5), Donut (1.6), Eclair (2.0-2.1), Froyo (2.2. -2.2.3), Ginder
Bread (2.3-2.3.7), Honey Comb (3.0-3.2.6), Ice-cream & sandwich (4.0-4.0.4), Jelly
bean (4.1 -4.3.1), Kit Kat (4.4 – 4.4.4), lollipop (5.0 – 5.1.1), Marsh mallow (6.0 -
6.0.1), Novgat (7.0 – 7.1.2), Oreo (8.0).
(ii) IOS: (I phone OS1)
I phone OS1 is the first major release of ios, apples mobiles operating system. I
phone OS 1.1.5 is the last and the last version of Apples’s iPhone OS1.this version of
ios was the first iteration of the touch – centric mobile operating system. No official
name was given on its initial release. Apple marketing literature simply stated that
the iPhone runs a version of Apple’s desktop OS, mac os then known as osx. On
march 6th 2008 with the release of the I phone software development kit (I phone
SDK) Apple named it I phone OS. They later went on to rename it “ios” on 7 th June
2010.
To update to I phone OS 1.1.3(version)
Cost $ 19.95 for iPod Touch users.
VERSIONS: I phone OS (1,2,3), ios (, 4,5,6,7,8,9,10,11).

(III) Windows operating system (mobile):


Windows mobile does Microsoft for develop a family of mobile operating systems
smart phones and pocket PC’s.

1. Start Menu: the start menu is a user interface element used in Microsoft windows since
Windows 95 and in some other operating systems. It provides a central launching point
for computer programs and performing other tasks.

2. MY COMPUTER: my computer is a section of Microsoft windows first found in Windows


95 and included with all later versions that allows you to explore and manage the
contents of your computer drivers.

3. COMMAND PROMPT: a command prompt is the input field in a text based user interface
screen for an operating system (or) program. A prompt in this context is something
designed to elicit and action. The command prompt itself is actually an executable CL 1
program, cmd.exe.

4. ADD AND REMOVE: in the control panel you can quickly access the old add (or) remove
programs by clicking (or) tapping the “Uninstall a program” link found in the program
section.

5. MS-OFFICE: MS-office is a suite of products developed by Microsoft corporation that


includes Microsoft word, excel, access, publisher, power point and outlook. Each
program serves a different purpose and is compatible with other programs included in
the package.

6. PC- SETTINGS: control panel (windows) settings (formally PC – settings) is a component


of windows 8 and later with which the user can customize and configure the operating
system.

7. MY DOCUMENTS: my document is the commonly recognized name of a special folder in


Microsoft windows and the actual name of the folder might be different when the
language of the installed copy of windows is not English.

8. ALL APPS: most PC users often use the all apps button (previously known as all program
button) in the start menu to quickly view installed programs and apps. The “All
programs” option has been renamed as “All apps” in windows 10and appears at the left
bottom of the start menu when you open the start menu.
9. INTERNET EXPLORER: internet explorer (formerly Microsoft internet explorer and
windows internet explorer, commonly abbreviated IE (or) MSIE is a series of graphical
web browsers developed by Microsoft and included in the Microsoft windows line of
operating systems starting in 1995. It was first released as part of the add-on package
plus for Windows 95 that year. Later versions were available as free downloads (or) in
service packs.

10. SHUT DOWN: shut down is a term used to describe the process of closing all software
programs in preparations to turn off a computers power. The OS is last program to be
close and it is highly recommended that all computers be properly shut down before
being turned off to help prevent data corruption.
