The concept of circular economy is surely the most stunning concept through out the
whole course. Nowadays, most of the countries are having the linear economy while
some of the advanced countries are trying to adapt the recycling economy. Waste is
produced for both of the systems and the production of waste seems to be inevitable
for an economy. The mindset of inevitable waste is rooted in my brain, and indeed
there is no economy can achieve “zero waste” in reality. I thought that the recycling
economy is the best thing we can do for the environmental protection. Therefore, I
was shocked when the concept of circular economy was first coming out in the lecture
note.
In the past, what we are doing for environmental protection is just “modifying”. We
try to modify the pre-existing economy mode and add things on it. As a result, circular
economy is developed and become an alternative of linear economy. However, this is
not the best solution to the problem. Circular economy is a game changer and a huge
revolution in global economy. The concept of designing and consuming is totally
different from the pre-existing capitalism economy. Circular economy focuses on the
restoration and regeneration, so that no waste is generated in the economy. There is no
doubt that the concept of circular economy is a huge break through and the most
effective way to save the planet. However, the traditional mindset of economy cannot
be overturned easily and decades of educational efforts are needed to equipped our
next generation for this economy system.

Novel entities is definitely my most concern sustainable issue. Although there is no
global quantification for this specific field, but many founding shows that the man-
made chemical pollutants start causing damage to nature and other creatures. There
are many photos showing creatures are trapped by plastic products and polluted by
oil. The food chain is possibly being affected due to the unbalanced number of
creatures, thus enlarging the problem of biodiversity. It is no doubt that the damage to
the nature is serious and there are more remain unseen. Since the novel entities are
man-made and not exist in natural world, the rate of decomposition of the waste is
very slow and takes thousands of years for it to decompose completely. The situation
of novel entities maybe close to the tipping point and it may cause a permanent
damage to the nature. Also, the negative effects to food chain due to novel entities are
affecting health of human beings. Since the novel entities appears in recent few
decades, the research about the health effects due to our human body are not
conducted in a large scale. This means that we do not know how these man-made
materials will affects our health, which makes the problem even urgent.
Finally, the antimicrobial agents also pollute the water and land, which makes the
nature unbalance and cause a negative effect. The negative effects will again affects
the human being and cause us to use more antimicrobial agents, thus a positive
feedback loop is formed.

As a Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering student, I am particularly interested in
the development of using clean energy. Therefore, SDG-7 (Affordable and clean
energy) draw most of my interest. As we know, the energy efficiency and
conservation are important for both renewable energy and non-renewable energy. A
high energy efficiency implies a better energy harvest for the same amount of input. If
a higher energy efficiency and conservation can be achieved, the unit price of energy
can be greatly reduced so that more and more people can afford the energy
consumption. Also, if the energy efficiency of renewable energy can be further
enhanced, the price-performance ratio of renewable energy can be increased and be
more attractive. For example, the solar power is considered as a low efficiency
renewable energy and it is costly for domestic solar power plant. If the solar plant has
a better energy efficiency and conservation, the domestic solar will be more popular
so that more clean energy can be harvested.
As an Undergraduate Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering student, I had learnt
some basic knowledge of thermodynamic and energy conservation. However, it is
definitely not enough to contribute and develop some advanced technologies in
energy conservation field. Therefore, studying in Postgraduate education related to
energy field is the first priority to achieve the goal. Knowledge and research
experience can be gained during the Postgraduate education and these would be useful
for the further development in energy field. Then, we can achieve the goal through
several ways, including joining energy-related company and continuing research in
the university.
