ME525L –Vibrations of Discrete Systems

Homework - 2 Date: 17/09/2024 Due: 01/10/2024

1. A portion of an automobile suspension system consist

of an elastic spring and a viscous damper, as shown in
figure 2, such that k/m = 40 sec-2.

a. Determine the allowable range (minimum limit) of the

ratio c/m such that any oscillation that occur will decay
by a factor of 90% within 1 cycle.

b. If the system is initially at rest imparting an initial

velocity of 0.6 m/s, determine the maximum vertical
displacement of the system if c/m = 20 sec-1.

c. With the same the same initial conditions, find the response assuming the system is critically damped.

d. Plot the system response for all three cases on a single graph (You might need Matlab or Excel for
this).

2. A control tab of an airplane elevator is hinged about

an axis in the elevator, shown as point O in the figure,
and activated by a control linkage behaving like a
torsional spring of stiffness kT. The mass moment of
inertia of the control tab is Io, so that the natural
frequency of the system is n = k T / Io . Because kT
cannot be calculated exactly, it is necessary to obtain
the natural frequency n experimentally. To this end,
the elevator is held fixed and the tab is excited
harmonically by means of the springs k2 while restrained by the spring k1, as shown in figure 3, and the
excitation frequency  is varied until the resonance frequency  r is reached. Calculate the natural
frequency  n of the control tab in terms of  r and the parameters of the experimental setup.

3. Refer to the 1DoF system with unbalanced rotating mass discussed in the class. The excitation
force acting on the system is given by 𝑓𝑒 (𝑡) = 𝑚𝑙𝜔2 𝑒 𝑖𝜔𝑡 and the force transmitted to the base
through the spring and damper is given by 𝑓𝑡𝑟 (𝑡) = 𝑘𝑥 + 𝑐𝑥̇ . Let 𝐹̃𝑒 (𝜔) and 𝐹̃ 𝑡𝑟 (𝜔) be the
complex amplitudes of oscillations of 𝑓𝑒 (𝑡) and 𝑓𝑡𝑟 (𝑡) respectively. Prove that the force
transmissibility is defined as 𝑇𝑓 (𝜔) = |𝐹𝑡𝑟 |⁄|𝐹𝑒 | is the same as the displacement transmissibility
of 1DoF system harmonic motion of the base. Plot 𝑇𝑓 vs. ω/ωn.
4. An automobile has a total weight of 45000
N. Its suspension has a combined stiffness of
162N/mm. It is negotiating a sinusoidal
disturbance of height 50 mm and a wave
length of 300 mm. What should be the speed
of vehicle in kmph in order that not more
than 5 mm of amplitude is being felt by the
passenger sitting inside the vehicle? (Neglect
damping)

5. A slender as shown in fig. (a) has a mass of 31 kg and length of 2.6m. A 50N force is statically
applied to the bar at P then removed. The ensuing oscillations of P are monitored, and the
acceleration data is shown in fig. (b). Derive the governing equation and use the data to find
spring stiffness k and damping coefficients c.

Figure (a) Figure (b)

6. A pendulum on a base moving harmonically in

the horizontal direction is given in the figure.
Assume the damping due to air resistance is
represented by a damping coefficient of ‘c’.

a) Derive the linear equation of motion for this

1DoF system assuming small angle for θ.

b) Using the principle of super position find out the

steady state response of the system.
