TP N°3 :
Spring constant
I. Introduction:
1. Objectives of the experiment:
1. Directly determine the spring constant K of a spring by measuring the
clongation versus applied force.
2. Determine the spring constant k from measurements of the period T
of oscillation for different values of mass
3. Indirect determination of k by the analysis of the dependence of the
period T on the miss M

2. EQUIPMENTLIST:
1. Spring
2. meter stick
3. table clamps
4. rods
5. Calibrated Hooked Masses

Figure 1
Part 1 : Spring constant

1) Attach the spring to a weight holder.

2) Measure the spring’s length at this point (L0).
3) After adding the first mass, measure the new length of the spring
and calculate the displacement from the original length.
4) Add more masses one by one, recording the spring’s total length
(L) each time
o Table 1:
Mass (Kg) Spring length (m) Weight (N)
0.05 1.3* 10^-2 0.49
0.1 4.5 * 10^-2 0.98
0.2 11.5* 10^-2 1.96
0.3 18.2* 10^-2 2.94
0.35 21.5* 10^-2 3.43
0.4 25* 10^-2 3.92
