CHAPTER 4: OUTCOMES DESCRIPTION
4.1
Smart farming incorporates information and communication
technologies into machinery, equipment and sensors used in
agricultural production systems. Technologies such as the IoT and
cloud computing are advancing this development even further by
introducing more robots and artificial intelligence into farming.
Smart agricultural practices allow for the generation of a large
volume of data and information. Farmers can use this information to
make data-based decisions and take action for improved productivity
and profitability.
Where Did It All Begin?
What technology is used in farming?
Agricultural technology has been evolving over the last 10,000 or so
years. Simple hand tools gradually evolved into the mechanical
equipment that now runs almost every aspect of commercial farming.
However, this kind of technology is generally based on mechanical
engineering solutions, without much in the way of ‘intelligence’. But
now, things are beginning to change…
How is Digital Farm Technology Transforming Agriculture?
Farming ‘smarter’ is no longer an ‘advanced’ tactic for savvy farmers;
it’s becoming an increasingly necessary way to optimise and preserve
human and natural resources.
Farm labour is becoming increasingly scarce due to urban migration
and ageing populations.
Intensifying climate change is altering growing conditions in less
predictable ways.
Earth’s resources and biodiversity are diminishing.
58
Smart farming tools can help reduce these impacts, minimise
environmental constraints and reduce production costs in farming
activities. Smart farming tools introduce a new level of technology
into agriculture, including mapping, robotics, geomatics, automation,
decision making and statistical processes.
59
11. How do you apply pesticides on your farm?
- Manual spraying
- Mechanical sprayers
- Drone sprayers
12. Do you follow any specific guidelines or safety protocols
when applying pesticides?
13. Due to increase in technology manual work has been
decreased. Can you say is still people are working or they
are depending on the machines for work?
14. Is there any problem with the soil after every yield? If
so explain?
15. How it is helping the farmer to increase the yield?
16. Did you observe any difference after using the
technology in farming? What are they? And why?
17. Do you practice crop rotation or mixed crops in your
field?
18. Are you getting the profit or loss as you depend on the
smart farming?
19. What type of machinery you are using for different
practices? And why?
20. Do you encourage the smart farming technology for
agriculture? Why?
60
4.3 Problems Identified
Increasing pests in the field to overcome this problem they are using
Traditional way to reduce pests.
Inefficient monitoring for the fields.
Over usage of chemicals leads to soil erosion.
seeds are getting wasted during the manual work and there are
less number of people are working in the fields to remove unwanted
plants.
Due to over usage of the chemicals environment is getting spoiled.
Lack of proper storage facilities can lead to high post-harvest losses
and farmers receiving a lower price for their commodities.
As more land is lost, it becomes more difficult to produce enough
food to feed the growing population.
Soil erosion
Biodiversity loss
Meeting consumers' changing tastes and expectations
Meeting rising demand for more food of higher quality
Investing in farm productivity
Adopting and learning new technologies
Staying resilient against global economic factors
Analysis for Solving the Problems:
AI-Driven Pest Management-- is an innovative approach to
controlling agricultural pests using advanced technologies such as
artificial intelligence (AI), machine learning, and data analytics.
Traditional pest management-- relies on chemical pesticides and
manual monitoring, which can be time-consuming, harmful to the
environment, and costly. AI-driven systems revolutionize this process
by using real-time data to predict, monitor, and control pest
populations more efficiently and sustainably.
