I. Abstract:
Provide a concise summary (150-200 words) of the project. Depending on the type of project (tool-based
or research-based), briefly describe the problem, approach, methodology, and expected outcomes.
II. Introduction:
● Background:
Introduce the context of the machine learning problem. Explain the significance of the problem,
whether it’s theoretical (research-based) or practical (tool-based).
● Problem Statement:
Clearly define the research question or the practical problem that the project will address.
Ensure that the problem is relevant to the field of machine learning.
● Objectives:
Define the objectives based on the chosen approach:
○ Research-based: State the research questions you aim to answer or the gap in current
knowledge you will address.
○ Tool-based: Specify the practical problem you aim to solve with your tool or product and
the expected functionalities.
III. Literature Review (For Both Approaches):
Summarize at least 7 relevant papers or sources from the machine learning domain.
● Key Contributions:
Highlight the important methodologies, contributions, or technological advancements from the
reviewed literature.
● Research Gaps or Tool Development Gaps:
For research-based projects, identify research gaps that your study will address.
For tool-based projects, identify gaps in current tools or technologies that your solution will aim
to fill or improve upon.
IV. Methodology:
Describe the methodology according to the chosen approach:
● For Research-Based Projects:
○ Approach:
Outline the overall research approach. This may include model design, data collection, or
theoretical analysis. Identify any machine learning algorithms, techniques, or
frameworks used.
○ Data Source & Processing:
Identify the dataset to be used, along with any preprocessing and feature engineering
techniques.
○ Evaluation Metrics:
Describe how the research findings or model performance will be evaluated (e.g.,
accuracy, precision, recall, etc.).
● For Tool-Based Projects:
○ Tool/Product Overview:
Provide an overview of the tool or product you plan to develop using machine learning
techniques. Highlight its features and intended use.
○ Design and Development:
Discuss the architecture of the tool or system, including the algorithms, models, or
platforms (e.g., TensorFlow, PyTorch) that will be used.
○ Functionality:
Explain the functionality of the tool, including how it will solve the identified problem,
and discuss any key features (e.g., user interface, data handling capabilities).
○ Testing and Evaluation:
Specify how you plan to test the tool or system, including any performance metrics,
benchmarks, or user testing (if applicable).
V. Expected Results:
● For Research-Based Projects:
○ Predicted Outcomes:
Discuss the anticipated findings of your research, including potential impacts on the
machine learning field.
● For Tool-Based Projects:
○ Tool Impact and Benefits:
Explain the expected practical results, such as how your tool/product will address the
identified problem and its potential impact on users or the industry.
VI. Conclusion:
● For Research-Based Projects:
Summarize the research problem, methodology, and potential contributions to the machine
learning field.
● For Tool-Based Projects:
Summarize the tool’s design, functionality, and its practical benefits for the intended user base
or domain.
VII. Submission Guidelines:
● Format:
Submit the proposal in the specified format (e.g., PDF, Word).
Include a cover page with the project title, student name, and date.
● Length:
The proposal should be concise but comprehensive.
○ The maximum length of the proposal: is 1 and a half pages.
○ The length of the complete project: is 4 to 7 pages.
● References:
Properly cite all the sources used in the literature review and methodology sections.
VIII. Evaluation Criteria:
Your project proposal will be evaluated based on the chosen approach (tool-based or research-based):
1. Abstract:
○ Clarity and comprehensiveness of the abstract.
2. Introduction:
○ Relevance and clarity of the problem statement.
○ Well-defined objectives (research or tool development).
3. Literature Review:
○ Depth and relevance of the reviewed papers.
○ Identification of research gaps or tool-related challenges.
4. Methodology:
○ Feasibility and innovation in the methodology (research approach or tool development).
○ Clear explanation of the chosen techniques or tools.
5. Expected Results:
○ Thoughtfulness of predicted outcomes (both research and tool-based).
○ Impact on the machine learning field or practical utility of the tool.
6. Clarity and Structure:
○ Organization and logical flow of the proposal.
○ Quality of writing and presentation.
7. References:
○ Proper and consistent citation of sources.
IX. Feedback and Iteration:
Feedback on the proposal will be provided in a class session. You may be required to refine and resubmit
the proposal based on the feedback.
