EEN-301: Power System Analysis and Control

Tutorial-II

1. In a three-bus power network as shown in the figure below, each line has a series impedance
of 0.05 𝑗0.15 p.u. while the shunt admittance is neglected. Obtain the YBUS matrix.

2. If a new bus (bus no. 4) is added with bus no. 3 through a transmission line of 𝑧 0.1
𝑗0.3 p.u. in the power network of Problem 1, obtain the modified YBUS matrix.

3. Calculate YBUS matrix for a four-bus power system with the following data:
Line Series Impedance (in pu) Total line charging
From To R X MVAr at 230 kV
1 2 0.01008 0.05040 10.25
1 3 0.00744 0.03720 7.75
2 4 0.00744 0.03720 7.75
3 4 0.01272 0.06360 12.75
The base values are 100 MVA and 230 kV.

4. In a three-bus power network as shown in the figure below, a regulating transformer with
off-nominal tap ratio of 1: 𝑡 is connected between bus 2 and bus 3 in series with a line with
the following details:

𝑉 ⁄𝑉 1: 𝑡
Line Series Impedance (in pu)
From To R X
1 2 0.05 0.15
1 3 0.05 0.15
2 3 0.00 0.05

Considering line at the non-unity side of the transformer, obtain the YBUS matrix for the
following cases:
(a) 𝑡 1.02
°
(b) 𝑡 𝑒

5. The four-bus power system of Problem 3 has the following bus data:

Bus Generation Load Voltage (in

Bus
Type P (MW) Q (MVAr) P (MW) Q (MVAr) pu)
1 Slack - - 50 31 1
2 PQ 0 0 170 105 -
3 PQ 0 0 200 124 -
4 PV 318 - 80 50 1.02

Using Gauss-Seidel method with flat start, perform four iterations of the load flow with the
following cases:
(a) Without any accelerating factor
(b) With accelerating factor, 𝛼 1.6
(c) With accelerating factor, 𝛼 1.6; and minimum and maximum reactive power
limits on generator at bus 4 as 0 MVAr and 200 MVAr, respectively.

6. A four-bus power system, as shown in the figure below, has the following line data
Table: Line data
Line Series Impedance (in pu) Half-line charging
From To R X susceptance (in pu)
1 2 0.15 0.4 0.04
1 3 0.10 0.3 0.05
1 4 0.15 0.6 0.04
2 3 0.07 0.25 0.03
3 4 0.09 0.3 0.04

Table: Bus data

Reactive power

Type (pu)
P Q P Q Min Max
1 Slack - - 2 0.6 1.06
2 PV 1.2 - 0 0 0.1 1.0 1.04
3 PQ 0 0 0.7 0.5 -
4 PQ 0 0 0.6 0.3 -

Assuming acceleration factor and specified tolerance as 1.4 and 0.0001, respectively, find
the bus voltages by Gauss-Seidel method. Using the load flow solution, compute the
following:
(a) Power flow at both ends of each line
(b) Power losses in each line
(c) Total losses in the system
(d) Active and reactive power by generator at bus 1
(e) Reactive power by generator at bus 2
