Tutorial-I
1. The following figure shows the single-line diagram of a power system with the following
specifications:
G: 20 kV, 300 MVA
T1 : 20/200 kV, 375 MVA
T2 : 180/9 kV, 300 MW
Load: 9 kV, 180 MW
Calculate the resistance of the load in per unit, if the nominal quantities of the generator
are chosen as the base quantities.
2. Three single-phase transformers, each rated 25 MVA, 38.1/3.81 kV, are connected in Y-Δ
and supplies to a three-phase, Y-connected balanced load of 1.2 Ω per phase from its low-
voltage side. Taking a base of 75 MVA, 66 kV for the high-voltage side of the transformer,
specify the base MVA and base kV for the low-voltage side. Determine the per-unit
resistance of the load on the base for the low-voltage side. Also, determine the load
resistance (in Ω) referred to the high-voltage side and the per-unit value of this resistance
on the chosen base.
3. If 100 V and 1 kVA are chosen as the base values on the generator side in the power system
shown below, calculate the current of the load in per unit for the following specifications:
G: 100 V
T1 : 200/400 V, 1 kVA, reactance = 10%
T2 : 200/200 V, 2 kVA, reactance = 10%
Line: Z = j8 Ω
Load: ZLoad = j6 Ω
4. For a power system as shown below, draw an impedance diagram in per unit by choosing
100 kVA and 2400 V as the base values for the generators.
5. The single line diagram of a power system is shown in the figure below. Draw the
impedance diagram and indicate all impedances in per unit on 100 MVA and 22 kV at
generator side with the following data:
G: 90 MVA, 22kV, X = 0.18 pu
T1 : 40 MVA, 22/220 kV, X = 0.10 pu
T2 : 40 MVA, 220/11 kV, X = 0.06 pu
T3 : 40 MVA, 22/110 kV, X = 0.064 pu
T4 : 40 MVA, 110/11 kV, X = 0.08 pu
M: 66.5 MVA, 10.45 kV, X = 0.185 pu
Line 1: 48.4 Ω
Line 2: 65.43 Ω
Load: 10.45 kV, 57 MVA, 0.6 power factor lagging
If the base values are selected as 90 MVA and 10.45 kV at motor side, draw the impedance
diagram indicating all impedances in per unit on new base values.
6. A three-phase line with an impedance of 2 + 𝑗𝑗4 Ω feed two balanced loads. The first load
is Y-connected with an impedance of 30 + 𝑗𝑗40 Ω per phase and the second load is Δ-
connected with an impedance of 60 − 𝑗𝑗45 Ω per phase. The line is supplied by a three-
phase balance source of 207.85 V. Compute the following:
a) Phase and line currents by each load
b) Total line current
c) Active, reactive and apparent power by each load
d) Total active, reactive and apparent power from the supply
e) Line voltage at load end
Using suitable base values, compute the above mentioned values in per unit and then
calculate the actual values.
