Overcurrent Relays
1. The input current to an overcurrent relay is 20 A. Calculate the operating time of the relay for
the following cases:
a. Low set: SI, TMS = 0.5, CS = 4 A, High set: None
b. Low set: VI, TMS = 1.0, CS = 5 A, High set: Instantaneous, CS = 18 A
c. Low set: Definite, Delay = 0.5 s, CS = 5A, High set: Instantaneous, CS = 25 A
2. An overhead Distribution feeder is subjected to a fault at its far end. The feeder is protected
using phase and ground overcurrent protection. The fault currents are

3. The radial distribution system of Fig-1 is protected using overcurrent protection. Each of the
protection units B1, B2 and B3 is equipped with three phase relays and one ground relay. All
the relays use one stage I> IDMT inverse characteristic (refer to Fig-2). Check the response of
the three protection units; for the following faults:
i- F1: three phase fault at bus#3, |Ia| = |Ib| = |Ic| = 3200A.
ii- F2: AG fault on line 3-4, |Ia| = 2400A.
iii- F3: BC fault on line 2-3, |Ib| = |Ic| = 4000A.
Comment on the performance of the protection system based on the results obtained.
