ACTION PLAN

Problem: Improper Waste Management

Goals: The main objective of this action plan is to eliminate waste lying
everywhere and in the community and to reduce the chances of catching
diseases attached to improper waste management.

Action Plan:

On the first day, we will talk to the barangay officials about the issue of
improper waste management within the barangay. We will propose ideas like
creating trash cans with luminous labels on the roads indicating their waste
type (biodegradable, non-biodegradable, or recyclable). Once the idea is
approved, in the next seven days, the creation of the luminous trash bins will
be done. The said bins will be made of metal, ensuring durability over time.
The idea of attaching luminous labels to the trash bins is to attract people to
throw garbage properly based on their orientation. The resources needed
include: metal sheets, luminous paint, welding machines and cutting tools
(provided by the laborers), and labor costs. The people in charge of this
project are the barangay officials, as they will be the ones to finance the
resources needed and the laborers to create the trash bins. One major
hindrance to this is the lack of budget to finance the initiative. However, if this
initiative is allocated with budget, it can be assured that the likelihood of
seeing waste lying around the community will decrease.

On day 9, we will conduct an awareness program. This program will be

spearheaded by the barangay officials, 4H Club, and us. The program will
inform people about proper waste management and the newly built trash bins.
The program will also discuss the distribution and the number of trash bins for
each purok or sitio. The resources that will be needed for this are the snacks
for people who will attend the program. This will be done from 9:00 a.m. to
11:00 a.m., but it can also be expected that there will just be a few people that
will attend the program because most people have jobs and the time schedule
is within their working hours. However, we are positive that there will still be
people who will join the program, and they can also help in informing other
people about waste management and gain positive attitude from the people.

On the 10th day, the barangay officials, 4H club members, and us will
distribute the trash cans per purok or sitio. In the distribution of the trash cans,
all purok officials must be present, and a brief discussion of how to properly
use the trash bins will be done. We will also discuss their accountability once
the trash cans are destroyed. They are also responsible for notifying their
purok members, who were not present during the program, about their
responsibilities in managing solid waste. The resources that will be needed for
this are a vehicle and gasoline to transport the bins from the barangay hall to
each purok. One problem that will be encountered at this event is the time
conflict because some purok officials might have different errands or work to
do. The expected outcome for this is that they can be able to inform their
members about the purpose of the trash bins.

After the distribution, everyone can use their trash bins. And every
month, the barangay officials will conduct “pulot kalat activity,” wherein
everyone in the community is encouraged to clean their surroundings, the
roads, drainage, canal, or river. The resources needed for this activity are
snacks (for everyone who will help), sweep, sack, and bolo (helpful in
cleaning). Some hindrances in achieving this are the lack of motivation of
people to join and time conflict. Despite the hindrances, we are also expecting
that there will be less, or better yet, no garbage lying around and less
likelihood of catching diseases that are brought about by improper waste
management.

Also, the barangay officials will collect the garbage monthly. The
recyclable and non-biodegradable materials will be sold to the junk shop.
Meanwhile, the biodegradable materials will be thrown into the compost pit
located away from residential areas to avoid pungent odors. The composted
materials will then be distributed to the local farmers, which will serve as their
natural fertilizer. Through this initiative, we are promoting sustainable
practices that do not just benefit our community but also the people.
