TAKE-HOME ASSIGNMENT 4

-------------------------------
Note that: International University treats plagiarism seriously, so be sure to avoid plagiarizing
your report from other students’ work or internet sources, or enabling the plagiarism of
another student’s report.

General instruction: for this assignment, you need to use MS Excel to draw graphs on Question 3.
Hence, you should use MS Word to make your answers with graphs and numbers generated by Excel,
and print your answers to submit in class.

Question 1 (20 points): The following data represent the lifetimes (in hours) of a sample of 10
transistors:

112, 121, 126, 108, 140, 104, 136, 134, 121, 118

a. Using a hand calculator, find the sample mean, median, and variance.
b. Given a value of 135, find its corresponding percentiles?

Question 2 (20 points): The following is a frequency table of daily commuting times from home to
work of a group of 15 people.

Travel time Frequency

12 2
15 1
18 4
20 3
25 2
30 2
40 1
a. Using a hand calculator, find the sample mean, sample median, and variance.
b. Find the sample 20 and 85 percentiles?

Question 3 (30 points): This question asks you to use MS Excel to provide descriptive statistics. The
file A4.xlsx contains data from the 2014 Vietnam Household Living Standard Survey (VHLSS). The
focus of the data is on the average hourly wages (shortly as ‘wage’) and the average working hours
(shortly as ‘hours’) of individuals across 63 provinces. The data is on the ‘data’ sheet; and the
description of each column is on the ‘description’ sheet.

Instruction: Each student has his/her own assigned provice. Using the LAST TWO digits of your
student number to learn about your assigned province. The numbers from ‘00’ to ‘49’ match with
province_code from ‘00’ to ‘49’. The numbers ‘50’ to ‘99’ need to be deducted by 50 to match with
province_code from ‘00’ to ‘49’. For example, if your last two digits is 23, your assigned
province_code is 23, and the name of the assigned province is ‘Nam Định’. If your last two digits
is 85, your assigned provice_code is 85-50=35, and the name of the assigned province is ‘Phú Yên’.

Use the data from your assigned province to answer these questions:

a. Draw the histogram for wage.

b. Draw two Box plots for wage of your assigned province and of Long An province
(province_code=50) in the same figure.
c. Compute the sample mean, median, variance and standard deviation for wage.
d. Draw the scatter plot between wage and hours. Compute the sample covariance and
correlation between wage and hours. State your comment about the relationship between
the two learning from your data.

Question 4 (30 points): This question asks you to read NOTE 2, which is also posted on Blackboard,
as a preparation for the next class. After reading the note, answer these questions:

a. What is the point estimation value for 𝜇 of the population distribution from the example
sample of 5 Vietnamese men in the note?
b. Does this value correctly capture 𝜇 of the population distribution or not? Briefly explain using
your own words.
