Transforms the Quadratic
Lesson
Function defined by 𝒚 =
1 𝒂𝒙𝟐 + 𝒃𝒙 + 𝒄 into the form
𝒚 = 𝒂(𝒙 − 𝒉)𝟐 + 𝒌.
In this lesson you will learn how to transform the quadratic function defined by 𝑦 = 𝑎𝑥 2 + 𝑏𝑥 + 𝑐 into
the form 𝑦 = 𝑎(𝑥 − ℎ)2 + 𝑘.
What’s In
A quadratic function can be represented by the following:
a.) Table of Values
x 0 1 2 3 4 5 6
y 5 0 -3 -4 -3 0 5
First Differences -5 -3 -1 1 3 5
Second Differences 2 2 2 2 2
This shows that the table of values show a quadratic function for the second
differences are the same.
b.) Graph
c.) Equation
𝑦 = 𝑥 2 + 6𝑥 + 5 is an example of a quadratic equation because it is a polynomial of
degree 2. It takes the form 𝑦 = 𝑎𝑥 2 + 𝑏𝑐 + 𝑐 and can be written in the form 𝑦 = 𝑎(𝑥 − ℎ)2 + 𝑘.
How will you transform the quadratic function defined by 𝑦 = 𝑎𝑥 2 + 𝑏𝑥 + 𝑐 into the form
𝑦 = 𝑎(𝑥 − ℎ)2 + 𝑘?
What’s New
A quadratic function is a linear function with a degree of two. The
standard form is 𝑦 = 𝑎𝑥 2 + 𝑏𝑥 + 𝑐 where a ≠0 while the vertex form is
𝑦 = 𝑎(𝑥 − ℎ)2 + 𝑘. To write the standard form of a quadratic function to vertex
form you may use the process of completing the square on the right hand side
of the function. As shown below:
Find the vertex form of 𝑦 = −2𝑥 2 + 12𝑥 + 4 by completing the square.
𝑦 = −2(𝑥 2 − 6𝑥 + 9) + 4 + 18
𝑦 = −2(𝑥 − 3)2 + 22
Here’s another example with procedure:
Write the given 𝑦 = 𝑥 2 − 10𝑥 + 22 into the form 𝑦 = 𝑎(𝑥 − ℎ)2 + 𝑘.
3
What is It
A.) To transform the given, 𝑦 = 𝑥 2 − 10𝑥 + 22 into the form 𝑦 = 𝑎(𝑥 − ℎ)2 + 𝑘 you
can do it by “Completing the Square.” Follow the steps below.
Step 1: Write the original function.
𝑦 = 𝑥 2 − 10𝑥 + 22
−10 2
Step 3: Add ( ) = −52 = 25 to each side.
2
𝑦 + 25 = (𝑥 2 − 10𝑥 + 25) + 22
B.) Express 𝑦 = 3𝑥 2 − 4𝑥 + 1 in the form 𝑦 = 𝑎(𝑥 − ℎ)2 + 𝑘. Follow the following steps.
Step 1: Group together the terms containing 𝑥.
𝑦 = (3𝑥 2 − 4𝑥) + 1
Step 5: Simplify and express the perfect square trinomial as square of binomial.
4 4 4
𝑦 = 3 [𝑥 2 − 𝑥 + ( )] + 1 − ( )
3 9 3
2 2 1
𝑦 = 3 (𝑥 − ) −
3 3
2 2 1
Answer: 𝑦 = 3𝑥 2 − 4𝑥 + 1 can be expressed as 𝑦 = 3 (𝑥 − ) −
3 3
What’s More
Here’s a brief example on how to transform quadratic function from
standard form: 𝑦 = 𝑎𝑥 2 + 𝑏𝑥 + 𝑐 into vertex form: 𝑦 = 𝑎(𝑥 − ℎ)2 + 𝑘:
𝑏 2 6 2
𝑦 = 𝑥 2 + 6𝑥 + 8 ( ) = ( ) = 32 = 9
2 2
𝑦 = 𝑥 2 + +6𝑥 + 9 + 8 − 9
𝑦 = (𝑥 + 3)(𝑥 + 3) + 8 − 9
𝑦 = (𝑥 + 3)2 − 1
Transform the following quadratic functions into the form 𝑦 = 𝑎(𝑥 − ℎ)2 + 𝑘.
1.) 𝑦 = 𝑥 2 − 8𝑥 + 17
2.) 𝑦 = 𝑥 2 + 6𝑥 + 3
3.) 𝑦 = 𝑥 2 − 4𝑥 − 4
4.) 𝑦 = 𝑥 2 − 6𝑥 + 8
5.) 𝑦 = 2𝑥 2 − 8𝑥 + 17

What I Need to Know
This module was designed and written with you in mind. It is here to help
you master Graphing a Quadratic Function and determine the following:(a) domain;
(b) range; (c) vertex; (d) intercepts; (e) axis of symmetry; and (f) direction of the
opening of the parabola. The scope of this module permits it to be used in many
different learning situations. The language used recognizes the diverse vocabulary level of students.
The lessons are arranged to follow the standard sequence of the course. But the order in which you
read them can be changed to correspond with the textbook you are now using.
After going through this module, you are expected to:
1. graph a Quadratic Function; and
2. determine the following properties of the graph:(a) domain; (b) range; (c) vertex; (d)
intercepts; (e) axis of symmetry; and (f) direction of the opening of the parabola.
What I Know
Select an item from the box to answer the following: Write your answer in your activity
notebook.
1. What equation is described in figure a? 6. Find the vertex of the graph in figure a.
2. What equation is described in figure b? 7. Find the y-intercept in figure b.
3. What equation is described in figure c? 8. What is the axis of symmetry of the graph in figure c?
4. Find the domain of the graph in figure a. 9. What is the direction of the opening of the graph in figure b?

Given the following graphs:
a. d. b. c.
2
(a) domain; (b) range; (c) vertex; (d)
intercepts; (e) axis of symmetry; (f) direction
of the opening of the parabola
In this lesson you will learn how to graph a quadratic function and determine the
domain, range, intercepts, axis of symmetry, and the direction of the opening of the graph of the
parabola.
What’s In
Based on the previous lesson, the quadratic function of the form
y ax bx c
2
can be written as y a( x h) 2 k , where “a” is a constant and
6
b 4ac b 2
(h, k) is the vertex of the parabola such that h and k or k f (h) .
2a 4a
The latter form is very useful in graphing a quadratic function since the coordinates of
the vertex ( h, k ), the axis of symmetry ( x h ) and the minimum or the maximum value (
y k ) are already given. The direction of the opening of the parabola is determined using the
value of “a”.
What’s New
A Volleyball setter is thinking of a strategy so that he could give the best
position for his hitters to attack the ball perfectly. Fortunately, the setter has
done it successfully knowing that he is good in mathematics. In order to do it,
the setter was planning three options: (1) he will toss the ball at a point above
the net symmetric to the point where the outside hitter (position IV) hitter should spike the ball for
an attack hit; (2) he will toss the ball at a point below the net for a quick attack; or (3) he will toss
the ball at the level of the net for a back row attack or opposite hitter’s (position I) attack. All of
these options use the concept of quadratic function particularly the graph which is a parabola.
What is It
How do you graph a quadratic function? What is the name of its graph?
Further, answer the following questions: (a) what do you call the minimum /
maximum point of the parabola? (b) what do you call the line parallel to the y-axis
passing through the minimum / maximum point of the parabola? (c) what do you
call a point on the x-axis or the y-axis where the parabola intersects? (d) which form of quadratic
function [ y ax2 bx c or y a( x h) 2 k ] is much easier to use when you graph it? (e)
quadratic function y a ( x h) k affect the graph of a quadratic
2
how does “a” of the
function? The graph of a quadratic function is a parabola. You can graph using the characteristics
of the graph of a quadratic function such as domain, range, vertex, intercepts, axis of symmetry
and the direction of the opening of the parabola. On the other hand, you can determine the
characteristics of the parabola using the graph.

Lesson Analyzing the Effects of Changing the
Values of a, h, k in the equation
3 𝒚 = 𝒂(𝒙 − 𝒉)𝟐 + 𝒌 of a Quadratic Functions
on Its Graph
In this lesson you will learn how to analyze the effects of changing the values of a, h and k
in the equation 𝑦 = 𝑎(𝑥 − ℎ)2 + 𝑘 of a quadratic function on its graph by following these steps:
1. Sketch the graph of the given quadratic function.
2. Determine the opening of the parabola. If 𝑎 > 0 the parabola opens upward, if 𝑎 < 0, the
parabola opens downward.
3. Determine the vertex of the parabola.
4. Find the x-intercept. Assign y=0 then solve for x.
5. Find the y-intercept. Assign x=0 then solve for y.
6. Construct a table if necessary.
7. Plot the vertex, the intercepts and some points if needed.
8. Connect these points with a smooth curve.
What’s In
Transform the given: 𝑦 = 2𝑥 2 − 4𝑥 + 4 into 𝑦 = 𝑎(𝑥 − ℎ)2 + 𝑘. Did you
get the correct answer? The answer is: 𝑦 = (𝑥 − 1)2 + 2. Here’s how:
First divide the equation 𝑦 = 2𝑥 2 − 4𝑥 + 4 to 2.
𝑦 = 𝑥 2 − 2𝑥 + 2.
1
Next find the half of 2. (2÷ =1)
2
Add 1 to 𝑥 2 − 2𝑥. 𝑦 = 𝑥 2 − 2𝑥 + 1 + 2
Separate the terms wit coefficient x. 𝑦 = (𝑥 2 − 2𝑥 + 1) + 2.
Form a perfect square trinomial. 𝑦 = (𝑥 − 1)2 + 2.
The final answer is 𝑦 = (𝑥 − 1)2 + 2.
Since the vertex form of quadratic function is 𝑦 = 𝑎(𝑥 − ℎ)2 + 𝑘 you can easily
identify the vertex, the x-intercept, y-intercepts and the opening of the parabola. (h,k) is the
vertex. a tells the direction of the parabola upward if it is greater than zero, downward if it is less
than zero.
How will you analyze the effects of changing the values of a, h, k in the
equation 𝑦 = 𝑎(𝑥 − ℎ)2 + 𝑘 of a quadratic function on its graph ?
What’s New
To analyze the effects of changing the values of a, h, k in the equation it is
important to graph it first so that you can clearly see the direction of the
opening of the parabola and its location if it slides to the right or to the left. Or
slides upward or downward.
For instance: describe the graph of the quadratic function: 𝑓(𝑥) = −(𝑥 − 3)2 − 4.
What is It
To further understand the graph of the given quadratic function:
𝑓(𝑥) = −(𝑥 − 3)2 − 4. Follow these steps:
Step 1: Sketch the graph.
Step 2: Determine the opening of the parabola. If 𝑎 > 0 the parabola opens upward, if 𝑎 < 0, the
parabola opens downward. In this case the parabola opens downward.
11
Step 3: Determine the vertex of the parabola. The vertex is at (h, k). Here the vertex is (3, -4).
Step 4: Find the x-intercept. Assign y=0 then solve for x. The x-intercept here is (1, 0).
Step 5: Find the y-intercept. Assign x=0 then solve for y. The –intercept is (5, 0).
Step 6: Construct a table if necessary.
x -3 -2 -1 0 1 2 3
f(x) 32 21 12 5 0 -3 -4
Step 7: Plot the vertex, the intercepts and some points if needed.
Step 8: Connect these points with a smooth curve. As shown from the graph above.

Determines The Equation Of Quadratic
4 Function Given A Table Of Value
You already know how to identify quadratic functions from other functions. This time we will
determine equation of quadratic functions given the tables of values.
What’s In
Complete the table below using the given function in each item.
1. f (x) = x2 – 5x – 6
x -1 0 1 2
f(x)
2. f (x) = x2 + 7x + 4
x -2 -1 0 1 2
f(x)
3. f (x) = x2 - 6x + 3
x -2 -1 0 1
f(x)
4. f (x) = x2 + 6x + 2
x 0 1 2 3
f(x)
5. f (x) = x2 + 6x + 2
x -2 -1 0 1
f(x)
What’s New
Study the function f(x) = 2x2 +1
1 1 1 1 1 difference in x)
X -2 -1 0 1 2 3
f(x) 9 3 1 3 9 19
As you have observed, the x values used in the table above are consecutive integers from -
2 to 3. This time, the first differences in f(x) are not equal, but the second differences are. That is,
the second difference in f(x) is 4.
The table of values of quadratic function f(x) = 2x2 + 1 shows that equal differences in x
produce equal second differences in f(x) which is one of the characteristics of the said function.
16
Through given table of values, we can also determine the quadratic equation or function.
Example: f(x)= ax2 + bx +c
X 0 1 2 3 4
f(x) c a+b+c 4a+2b+c 9a+3b+c 16a+4b+c
2a 2a 2a second difference
(x)= x2 + 2x +1
X 0 1 2 3 4
f(x) 1 4 9 16 25
3 5 7 9 first difference
2 2 2 second difference
Since, f(x) = g(x), we can equate their first and second differences, such that: 2a=2 , a+b=3
and c=1.
Hence, a = 1.
Since, a=1; therefore, a + b = 3
1+b=3
b=2
We can generalize that:
1
a= ( of the second difference)
2
b the first difference when x=0 minus the value of a.
c = f(0)
Note: this formula is applicable only when the difference in x is equal to 1.
What is It
Example1. Find the quadratic function or equation describe by the table of values below.
x 0 1 2 3 4
f(x) -2 5 18 37 62
7 13 19 25 first difference
6 6 6 second difference
1
Therefore, a = = (6) a = 3.
2
a+b = 7 c = f(0)
3+b = 7 c = -2
b=4

Lesson
Determines the equation of quadratic
5 function given a graph
The graph of a quadratic function is a parabola. The parabola can either opens upward or
downward. It has a turning point called vertex which is either the lowest point or the highest point
of the graph.
The graph of quadratic function is expressed in to different forms, the standard ( y = ax2 +
bx + c ) or vertex form y = a(x-h)2 + k, where (h, k) is the vertex.
What’s In
As you can remember in graphing quadratic function we must find the
equation of the axis of symmetry and the coordinates of the vertex, lastly we
should prepare a table of values and draw the graph.
Graph the following quadratic function.
1. f (x) = x2 + 3
2. f(x) = x2 + 2x + 1
3. f(x) = 2x2 – 1
4. f(x) = –3x2 + 12x – 8
5. f(x) = x2 – 4
What’s New
How can we derive the quadratic equation given the vertex and a point?
We know that quadratic function can be written in the form of f(x) = a(x-h)2 +
k, where the vertex is (h,k). we have to use this form of quadratic function to
derive an equation.
Example 1:
1. Write an equation of quadratic function whose graph is a parabola that a vertex (2,-4)
passing through the origin.
Solution:
h = 2 and k = -4
We use the quadratic function in the form f(x) = a(x-h)2 + k to find the equation. In this
case, we have to find the value of a first.
Since it passes through the origin, we substitute 0 to f(x). Thus, we have:
a(x-h)2 + k = 0
a(0-2)2 + (-4) = 0
a(4) – 4 = 0
4a = 4
a=1
Example 2.
Write an equation of the parabola whose vertex is ( -1, -3) passing through (1, 5).
Solution:
h= -1 ; k = -3
solve for a:
a ( x – h )2 + k = 0
a(1-(-1)2) + ( -3 ) = 5
a (2)2 – 3 = 5
4a = 8
a=2
Therefore the equation is 2(x+1)2 – 3 = 0.
19
What is It
Find the equation of the quadratic function from the graph below.
Example # 1.
Solution:
y = a ( x – h)2 + k
0 = a ( 5 – 2)2 + (-3)
0 = a ( 3)2 – 3
3 = 9a

Determines the equation of quadratic
6 function given the zeros.
One of the methods of finding the zeros of the function is by factoring. We get the factors of
the given quadratic function, then solve for the zeros. Now, we will do the reverse. Given the zeros,
we will find the quadratic equation.
.
What’s In
Let us first recall in finding the roots of quadratic equations by factoring.
Example.
(find the factor of 6 in which if you add the two numbers the result
Factor: x2 – x -6 = 0
is the b term.)
( x + 3)(x - 2) = 0
X = -3 and x = 2 ( these are the roots or zeros of the functions)
Try these:
1. (a + 1)(a + 2) = 0
2. x2 − 11x + 19 = −5
3. n2 + 7n + 15 = 5
4. b2 + 5b − 35 = 3b
5. 3r2 − 16r − 7 = 5
What’s New
We already know how to find the factor or even the roots of a quadratic
equations or function. This time we will know how to find the equation given the
roots or the zeros of a function.
Example:
Find the zeros of the function f(x) = x 2 + x – 6.
Solution:
Let f(x) = 0 x2 + x – 6 = 0
Factor the left member (x+3)(x-2) = 0
Solve for x. x+3=0 x-2=0
x = -3 x=2
the zeros of the function are x = -3 and x = 2.
What is It
1. Find the quadratic function whose zeros are 5 and -3.
Solution #1
x= 5 and x= -3
x - 5 = 0 and x + 3 = 0 equate to zero
(x - 5) (x + 3) write as factors
x2 – 5x + 3x – 15 = 0 multiply the factors
x2 – 2x – 15 = 0 combine like terms
f(x) = x2 – 2x – 15 quadratic function
Solution #2.
To find the quadratic function of the zeros 5 and -3, use this form
F(x) = a (x-r1)(x-r2), where a=1 such that a = LCD of r1 and r2.
Then, F(x) = a (x-r1)(x-r2) f(x) = x2 – 2x – 15

2. Find the quadratic function whose zeros are and 3.
3
2
x= and x= 3
3
3x - 2 = 0 and x - 3 = 0 equate to zero
(3x - 2) (x - 3) write as factors
3x2 – 2x - 9x + 6 = 0 multiply the factors
3x2 - 11x + 6 = 0 combine like terms
f(x) = 3x2 – 11x + 6 quadratic function
