a) Given that 3 x =9 y−1, show that x=2 y−2.

b) Solve the simultaneous equations:

1) x=2 y−2

2) x 2= y 2 +7

2. The curve and the line given by the equations

Where k is a non-zero constant, intersect at a single point.

a) Find the value of k.

b) Give the coordinates of the point of intersection of the line

and the curve.

3. The quadratic equation ( 2 k−1 ) x 2 + ( k +1 ) x+ k=0 has distinct real

roots.

a) Show that 7 k 2−6 k −1< 0.

b) Hence find the possible values of k.

4. The equation 2 x 2+ 4 kx −5 k=0 , where k is a constant, has no real
