TASK - 4
AIM: Every student should install Linux on the computer. This computer should
have windows installed. The system should be configured as dual boot
(VMWare) with both Windows and Linux. Lab instructors should verify the
installation and follow it up with a Viva.

VMWare, a short form of “Virtual Machine Ware”. A cloud computing company

that develops virtualization software, management, and networking interfaces
or tools. It provides hypervisor tools or products that help in running virtual
machines, clusters, and containers. By using this software, we can virtualize
the computer with required computing resources and hardware customization
on the actual computer (Physical computer). We need the VMware application
and Ubuntu ISO file.
VMWare Workstation is an application developed by VMWare to create virtual
machines, containers, and Kubernetes clusters on any desktop or server
system. VMWare Workstation Pro 17 is the latest and widely used virtualization
software to create and manage different operating systems on a single
machine. VMWare released VMWare Workstation in two products: VMWare
Workstation Pro and VMWare Workstation Player. VMWare Workstation Player is
released on a free license with limited features, whereas VMWare Workstation
Pro is an enterprise paid version that has loaded with a lot of features. VMWare
Workstation provides advanced features and functionalities for developers to
test their codes without any compatibility issues.

Installing VMware on Windows

Step 1: Open the VMware Workstation Player 17. Here we have option VMware
Workstation 17.0.0 Player for windows 64 – bit operating system. Click on the
download button for installation. Download will start and an .exe file will be
downloaded. While downloading, ensure you have a proper internet connection,
as the file may be large.
Step 2: Open the (.exe) file and install it. After installing the VMware
workstation Player 17 ready to start downloading the Ubuntu 22.04.3 LTS. Here
LTS stands for long-term support.
Step 3: Download the Ubuntu ISO file.
Installing Ubuntu in VMWare
Step 4: Once the Ubuntu ISO file is downloaded, open VMware Workstation.

Step 5: Click on “Create new virtual machine”. Browse the ISO file that has
been downloaded and select it.

Step 6: Now enter the personalize linux information. Then enter the username
and also provide password. Then enter the same password again in the confirm
password, click on next.
Step 7: Enter Virtual machine name Ubuntu 64 – bit and enter the default
location where the newly created virtual machine will be stored. We can
change the location by click on browse button otherwise keep the same
location and click on next

Step 8: Specify disk capacity. Here you can increase or decrease the
maximum disk size but the recommended size for Ubuntu 64 bit is 20GB. After
select the split virtual disk into multiple files option that means splitting the
disk makes it easier to move the virtual machine to another computer but may
reduce performance with very large disks. Then click on Next.
Step 9: Virtual machine wizard is ready to create Virtual machine. But you can
Customize the hardware information, select memory and you can increase the
memory size that is RAM size depending on your computer. Select the
Processors, enter the number of processors cores as maximum as possible
depending on your computer processor and then click on close. Now click on
finish to create virtual machine and start installing ubuntu.

Step 10: Ubuntu is loading on ISO file. It will take time for installation
configuration. Ubuntu has been successfully installed in VMWare. Now open
VMware and click on ubuntu-64 which appears on the left panel. (If not directly
opened). Select the language and click on next. Select the Normal or Minimal
installation based on your requirements.
The difference between the two options is the installation of basic tools and
more advanced applications only.
Step 11: To do a clean install, select Erase disk and install Ubuntu and click
Install Now and click Continue to confirm the changes to be made on the disk.
After marking the location, you live in on the map, click Continue. Type your
username for your Ubuntu virtual system and continue after creating a strong
root password. Wait while Ubuntu is installed on the virtual computer you
created. At this stage, some files will be downloaded and installed
automatically from the Internet. After the installation wizard has copied the
Ubuntu system files and installed the necessary software, restart your system.

Step 12: Type the root password you created to log in, and press Enter. After
logging in, the system configuration wizard will appear. If you want to log in to
Google, Microsoft, or other services in Ubuntu, you can do so by typing your
personal information in the Online Accounts window. If you prefer to configure
your account later, click the Skip button.
