A Family Picnic

The Jones family is having a family reunion at a park. Can you help figure out who
brought what and how much they spent?

1. Grandma Jones was in charge of bringing paper plates and utensils. She bought 3
packs of paper plates for $5.19 and 2 boxes of plastic silverware. She spent a total of
$12.09 on plates and silverware. Let p be the cost of a pack of paper plates, and s be
the cost of a box of plastic silverware.
a. Write two equations using p and s to describe Grandma Jones’ purchase.

b. Which price is easier to find, the plates or the silverware? Why?

Find the price.

c. Now that you’ve found the price of one of the items, can you find the price of
the other item? How?

2. Uncle Craig was in charge of bringing chips and salsa. A bag of chips costs $2.25 and a
jar of salsa costs $3.50. Uncle Craig spent a total of $41 on both items. He bought 3
times as many bags of chips as jars of salsa. Let b be the number of bags of chips he
bought and j be the number of jars of salsa he bought.
a. Write an equation involving b and j that represents the total cost of his
purchase.

b. How is the value of b related to the value of j? Write an equation to describe

this.

c. Determine how many bags of chips and jars of salsa Craig bought.
3. There was a total of 34 people at the family reunion. To feed the crowd, 140 oz of
pulled pork were prepared. Five oz of pulled pork is portioned for each adult and three
oz of pulled pork is portioned for each child. Let a be the number of adults and c be
the number of children at the family reunion.

a. Write an equation describing the relationship between a and c.

b. Write an equation for the total amount of pulled pork needed in terms of a and c.

c. Determine the number of adults and the number of children at the reunion.
Clearly show your reasoning.

4. What strategies did you use to solve questions 1-3? How were they the same? How
were they different?

QuickNotes

Check Your Understanding

1. Magdalena is a chef at a breakfast café. She needs 4 eggs to make a quiche and 6
eggs to make a batch of crepes. She has 48 eggs total.
a. Write an equation to represent this situation.

b. If she uses all 48 eggs, give at least two possible combinations of quiches and
batches of crepes she can make.

c. If she made 7 more quiches than batches of crepes, determine how many
quiches she made and how many batches of crepes she made.

2. Solve the system for w and z.

−4𝑤 + 5𝑧 = −19
!
𝑧 = 2𝑤 + 1

3. Brock bought 4 candy bars and 2 packs of gum at the gas station and spent $9.80. Two
packs of gum cost the same as three candy bars. Let g represent the cost of a pack of
gum and c represent the cost of a candy bar.
a. Write a system of equations to represent this situation.

b. Solve the system and write a sentence explaining your results.
