Aim- To identify acidic and basic radicals in given inorganic salt.

S.No Experiment Observation Inference

Preliminary tests
Physical examination
a) Noted the colour of the salt White Cu2+, Fe2+, Fe3+ absent
NH4+, S-2, CH3COO-
b) Noted the smell of the salt No specific odour Absent.

Identification of acid radical

Dil sulphuric acid test
Treated a pinch of the salt No gas evolved CO32- , S2-absent.
With dil H2SO4 and warmed.
Con sulphuric acid test
Heated a pinch of the salt with Con A reddish brown gas NO3- present.
sulphuric acid evolved which turned
FeSO4 solution black.
Copper chips test
Heated a pinch of the salt with Intensified Reddish NO3-present.
conc. sulphuric acid and a few brown gas evolved.
copper chips.

S.No Experiment Observation Inference

Confi matory test for acid radical
a) Ring test
To 2-3 ml of the salt solution, A dark brown ring NO3- confirmed
added freshly prepared FeSO4 formed at the junction
solution. Now added conc H2SO4 of the two liquids
along the sides of the test tube.

Identification of basic radical

NaOH test
Heated a pinch of salt with No ammonia gas evolved NH4+ absent
conc.NaOH solution
Preparation of original salt solution
Prepared original salt solution by dissolving a pinch of salt in 10 to15mL of distilled water or dil.H
Cl or conc.HCl, cold or hot. Label it original solution (O.S).
Group separation
a) To a few drops of the original No brown ppt. formed Group zero absent
solution added 1 mL of (NH4+absent)
Nessler’s reagent and excess of
NaOH solution
b) To a few drops of the original
solution added 2 mL of dil.HCl. No precipitate formed Group I absent
(Pb2+absent)
c) To a few drops of the original
solution added 2 mL of dil. HCl No precipitate formed Group II absent
and then passed H2S gas (Cu2+absent)

d)To a few drops of the original No precipitate formed Group III absent
solution added1 mL of NH4Cl (Fe3+, Al3+absent)
and 2ml of NH4OH.
e) To a few drops of the original No precipitate formed Group IV absent
solution added1 mL of NH4Cl (Zn2+ absent)
and
2mL of NH4OH and then
passedH2S gas.
f) To a few drops of the original White precipitate Group V present (Ba2+,
solution added 1mL of NH4Cl, formed Sr2+, Ca2+ present)
2mL of NH4OH and 2mL of
saturated solution of (NH4)2CO3
Confirmatory test for basic radical.
a) Potassium chromate test
To a few drops of the original Yellow precipitate Ba2+confirmed
solution added 2 to 3 drops of obtained
potassium chromate solution.
b) Flame test
Prepared a paste of the salt with Persistent grassy green Ba2+confirmed.
Conc.HCl and performed flame flame On prolonged
test. heating.

Result:
The given simple salt is: Barium chloride (Ba(NO3)2)
Acid radical: NO3-
Basic radical: Ba2+
