Q1. Consider the signal x(t) = cos(ωo t) + sin2 (2ωo t), where ωo = 2π/To .

a) Find the complex exponential Fourier series.

b) Determine the average power of x(t).

Q2. For a baseband signal m(t) = cos(ωm t).

a) Find the DSB-SC signal, and sketch its spectrum.

b) Identify the USB and LSB.
c) Verify that the DSB-SC modulated signal can be demodulated by the demodulator shown
below.

Q3. Sketch φAM (t) for modulation indices of µ = 0.5 and µ = 1, when m(t) = Bcos(ωm t).

Q4. a) An upper-sideband single-sideband (SSB) can be generated by feeding a message

signal m(t) into the input port of the below circuit. This is known as the phase-shifted
method for SSB signal generation. Determine the modulated signal s(t) at the output port.

b) Prove and verify that the below-modified circuit is an upper-sideband SSB signal
demodulator.
Q5. Consider an analog message m(t) with Fourier transform M (ω) = P (ω−1)+P (ω+1),
where P (ω) is a triangle centered at ω = 0 with height 1 and base spanning the interval
[−1, 1] (that is, P (ω) = 0 for |ω| > 1 and P (ω) = 1 − |ω| otherwise).

a) Assuming AM-DSB-SC with carrier frequency ωc = 100, plot the Fourier transform of the
modulated signal φ(t).
b) Provide the frequency response H(f) of a filter that can be applied to φ(t) to output
AM-SSB.

Q6. The figure below shows a scheme for coherent (synchronous) demodulation. Show
that this scheme can demodulate the AM signal [A + m(t)]cosωc t regardless of the value of
A.

Q7. For the AM signal shown below with modulation index µ = 0.8:

a) Find the amplitude and power of the carrier.

b) Find the sideband power and the power efficiency η.
