RESEARCH REPORT

Meaning of Research Report


• A report prepared after the completion of research work incorporating all procedures and findings of
research is called research report.
• It is a final product or output of any systematic investigation. It is a clear and concise documentation of
the facts.
• It is scientific and professional communication regarding research findings.
Krishna Swami, "Research report is a formal statement of a research process and its result."
An effective report deserves:
• Uniformity
• Consistency, and
• Regularity
Purpose of Research Report
• To provide the information regarding the findings of a research work i.e. methods, data analysis,
conclusion.
• To elicit crucial facts for solution derived and decision making.
• To prove the worth and legitimacy of assigned research job.
• To provide the judgment tools of the research and research work.
• To communicate the research findings professionally.
• To pertain the credibility of the research.
• To develop appreciation of standards, consolidate arguments and identify the knowledge gaps.

Process of Research Report
• Logical analysis of subject matter
• Preparation of the final outline
• Preparation of the rough draft

Types of Report
• Preliminary report: A report that is prepared and presented after the collection of data is known as
preliminary report.
• General report: A report that is prepared after the completion of research work incorporating the
procedures and findings concisely is known as general report.
• Technical report: A report that focuses on research methodology rather than other information is
known as technical report.

• Research reports popular for business purpose are: Formal and Informal, Written and Oral, Internal and
External, Long and Short, Descriptive and Analytical, Technical and Popular etc.
Academic research reports are classified into following two groups:
• Descriptive report: A report that is prepared explaining the collected data and facts in organized way
is known as descriptive report.
• Analytical report: A report that contains the analysis of data is known as analytical report. Analytical
reports recommend some measures to improve the situation. Policy research and managerial research are
the examples of analytical report.

Methods of Citation and References in the Text of Report

• Short citation: within three lines (40 words), keep within paragraph, use inverted commas.
• Long citation: more than three lines/40 words, separate paragraph, no inverted commas, five space
before, single line space, space both sides (hanging)
• Use of ellipses: (…) to omit some parts in the quotation which is not necessary
• Indirect quotations or paraphrasing: no inverted commas, only name of the writer and year of
publication
• Footnote: to clarify the information of the body, with superscript numbers
• Abbreviations: use of short forms in the report
• Citation style when there is one or more writers: surname & date, to repeat, Pant et.al. (1990), for direct
quotation at last (Pandey, 2008), if more writers keep in alphabetical order.
Use of References or Bibliography
APA style is used rigorously in the field of social science research. Thus, while applying APA style, following
factors should be taken into consideration:
 References should be managed in alphabetical order.
 You should write surname and first alphabet of first and middle name, the date of publication inside the
bracket and other information. Like Adhikari, D.R. (2012).
 You should use capital letter only for first alphabet of name and title of the reference materials.
 You should give double space in between two reference materials.
 You should arrange in order of dates if single writer has two works and they are used in the report. for
example,
