Wind Speed Sensor System

Introduction

The wind speed sensor system installed in N-GN corridor is a set of devices which are working together
continuously for sensing wind actual speed of wind blowing around the Noida Metro Rail Corridor. This system
is installed to detect high wind speed so to prevent any incident by ceasing train operations.

The anemometer generates pulse based upon wind speed & converts it to 4-20 mA signal which are read by
ADC & simultaneously transmitted to OCC via RTU of respective unit. The Display Screen reads data from ADC
& displays it on the screen. For wind speed > 70 KMPH the relay (Y2) is closed & hooter is activated.

Various components of Wind Speed Sensor

1. Anemometer
2. ADC Module
3. Signal Filter
4. SMPS
5. Display Screen
6. Isolating Amplifier
7. Hooter

In the above picture wind speed sensor setup is shown which is enclosed in a housing and installed in station
controller’s room at SEC 51, NSEZ, SEC-144, Knowledge Park II and Depot Station. All above mentioned devices
are clearly visible in this picture.

Anemometer

The Global Water Wind Speed Sensor is constructed of high-impact materials, ensuring its durability and
ruggedness even in severe weather conditions. The wind speed indicator has a very low threshold, and it
responds accurately to subtle changes in wind speed. The wind speed transmitter is molded to 25 ft of marine
grade cable, with lengths up to 500 ft available upon request. The wind speed sensor's output is 4-20 mA with
two wire configurations. The wind speed transmitter's electronics are completely encapsulated in marine
grade epoxy within a rubber sleeve.

This anemometer is installed on the roof of the metro station with the support of a stainless-steel pipe. A 2
core 0.5 Sq. mm cable is coming internally to the wind sensor housing unit installed in Station controller room.
For this 2-core cable 1 core is used for 24V DC supply to anemometer and other core is used to receive 4-
20mA output to the filter module.

wind speed exceeds from 70km/hr. According to the settings the default wind speed will be 8km/hr. at 4mA
current when wind speed exceeds from 8km/hr. in actual then the speed will start varying on wind sensor
display screen as well as OCC SCADA system along with mA current.

This ADC module is installed in housing unit of wind speed sensor system installed in station controller room.
There four devices connected with this module one is SMPS AC/DC power supply which provides 24V DC
output supply to the module to operate, second one is filter modules which provides un distorted 4-20mA
values coming from anemometer, third one is digital display which shows the 4-20mA current values and wind
speed through ADC module and fourth one is hooter which is triggered by NO contact of ADC module at the
time high wind speed condition.

Maintainance and Trouble shooting

pg. 9
From maintainace point of view every device or equipment need to be checked on preodic basis to ensure
proper functioning of the device with outmost efficiency all the time. Here in wind speed sensor system
installed at all five locations of Noida Metro Rail corridor also needs maintainance by following bellow
mentioned checklists.

Annemometer

For annemometer maintainance we have to check the annemometer physically by accecing the roof of the
location were it is installed and below mentioned checklist needs to be followed.

1. Check outgoing 2 core cable connections which should be properly terminated and dressed with
stainlees steel pipe of the structure as it might get disturbed in high wind blowing conditions due to
some external substance.
2. Check movement of 3 cup wind propeller it should not move hard and should be free enough to move
with wind speed.
3. Check alingment and hodlding strength of annemometer stucture with the roof it should be sturdy.
4. Ensure house keeping around the annemometer structure, there should not be any sharpe of heaving
material araound which could damage the structure in high wind speed condition.
5. Check output 4-20mA and varying wind speed on display screen.

SMPS

AC to DC power supply installed for auxillary supply of various devices of wind speed sensor system is the
most important device. Which is need to be checked preodically to ensure proper supply is being suplied to all
devices for which below mentioned checklist is to be followed.

1. Check the output voltage of SMPS using multimeter which should be around 24V DC and there should
not be any leakage voltage or current with respect to earth terminal.
2. Check the input voltage of SMPS using multimeter which should be around 220V AC and there should
not be any leakage voltage or current with respect to earth terminal.
3. Check tightness of all connections of the SMPS.
4. Proper Cleaning of dust is to be done with fine microfiber cloth on surfaces.

Hooter

pg. 10
Hooter alarm installed above the housing unit of wind speed sensor system also a improtant device of the
system which alearts the on duty station controller during the high wind speed conditions and it is triggerd
from ADC module. To ensure proper functioning of hooter below mentioned checklist is to be followed.

1. Pull out hooter from the wall hanging clip and can be cleaned with micro fiber cloth.
2. Check both terminals behind the hooter should be tight and properly connected.
3. Check the working of hooter by shorting the trigger terminals of ADC mode it should blow and if it does
not blows the check other end behind the hooter.
4. Ensure proper cleaning of dust from inside and outside of the hooter using fine microfiber cloth.

Isolating Amplifier

The isolating amplifier is the device which provides 4-20mA output to ADC and AI card (RTU) so it is also
equally improtant device of wind speed sensor system. To ensure proper working below mentioned checklist
is to be followed.

1. Check all connections of the device which should be sturdy and tight if any of the connection is loose
make it tight.
2. The isolating amplifier runs on both 14V DC and 220V AC supply so ensure the supply should be
available to the device around proper measurments.
3. Check 4-20 mA at both used outputs using multimeter.
4. Ensure proper cleaning of dust from outside of isolating amplifier using fine microfiber cloth.

Display Screen

The display screen is a touch screen smart display which shows the wind speed with 4-20mA output on the
display and there is a “Acknowledge” button configured on display which can be used to aknowledge the
bitton when alarm blows during high wind speed conditions to stop the alarm. To maintain the proper
functioning of this device below mentioned checklist need to be followed.

1. Check all connections of the device which should be sturdy and tight if any of the connection is loose
make it tight.
2. Ensure proper working of touch button of acknowledge by stimulation alarm by shorting triggering
wire.
3. Ensure proper delivery of auxillary supply to the device.
4. Ensure proper cleaning of dust from outside of isolating amplifier using fine microfiber cloth.

ADC Module

The ADC module is very important as well as critical part of the wind speed sensor system the maintainance of
which should be done very carefully. As there is nothing much from the maintenance point of view but it can
be always be cleaned from outside with microfiber cloth carefully and check RUN led is glowing and there is no
Error Led sould glow.
