Facts about Culebra Island Culebra Island is approximately 7 miles long and 3.5 miles wide. Its location is about 17 miles East of Puerto Rico, 12 miles West of St. Thomas and 9 miles North of Vieques. Almost 2,000 residents call it home and enjoy a warm, dry, tropical weather year-round with temperatures between 70F 92F. It was first called Little Passage by the French, Danish & British and later, colonized by the Spanish crown on October 27, 1880. How it got the name of Culebra is still a mystery. Some say it came from the name of the first settlement in Culebra, which was named in honor of St. Ildefonso de Culebra known as the Bishop of Toledo. In February 1909, President Theodore Roosevelt established the Culebra National Wildlife Refuge comprising of portions of the mainland and several of its surrounding cays. An adjacent island, Culebrita, holds what was the oldest operating lighthouse in the Caribbean until 1975 when it was shut down by the U.S. Navy and Coast Guard and later became a historical monument on 1981. Its construction started on September 25, 1882 and it was inaugurated on February 25, 1886. Culebra is a U.S. Territory, no passport is required. Heres a description of their typical tour package: They begin by kayaking North on Tamarindo Beach while taking in the gorgeous scenery of Culebra and Cay Luis Pea. After about 30 minutes of paddling, youll arrive at Tamarindo
Grande, put your snorkeling gear on and dive into the refreshing coastal waters to discover the wonders under the sea. After seeing one of Culebras finest natural reserves called marine flora and fauna, youll kayak back to enjoy some cold beverages and snacks. Wait ... there is still more! Grab your snorkeling gear again because your are heading out to swim towards the sea grass beds where yet another secret awaits. There are two ways to make Reservations - Online or by phone. Culebra Island Adventures is open year round, from Wednesday to Monday. How long is the tour/trip? Airplane (San Juan to Culebra): 30 minutes Ferry (Fajardo to Culebra): 1.5 hours SEAventure: About 3.5 hours What if I need to cancel? We understand that emergencies do happen and that is why we have a 48 hour cancellation policy before the day of your scheduled tour. You have the freedom to change dates or cancel the reservation at any point 48 hours before the scheduled start time without penalty. There will be a $25 per person penalty if you cancel your reservation between 24-48 hours before the scheduled start time of your tour. If you cancel less than 24 hours before the scheduled start time of your tour, you will be fully charged. We kindly ask that all changes or cancellations must be made in writing through email to [email protected] What if the weather is not ideal? Weather is not always easy to predict in the Caribbean. Tours that are cancelled due to weather conditions will not be charged. Culebra Island Adventures makes the final decision if a tour is cancelled. Yes it is! CIA tour guides will be there to accommodate everyone. We offer two seat kayaks for our guests, and if need be someone will share a kayak with a fellow guest from a different group or one of our guides. You may also ride a one person kayak based on availability.
Is there a weight limit in order to participate? The weight limit is a total of 500 lbs per two-person kayak. Please contact us with any further questions. Do you have a minimum age requirement? Yes we do. Guests must be of Six years age or older. Guests above 16 years of age or older are considered an adult. Any guest that is 15 years old or younger must travel with their parents or legal guardian and have written consent from their them. What do we do with our personal things? Do you have a safe place to keep them? Yes, we will provide secure storage for your personal belongings while on tour. Will you have something to eat or drink on the tour? Yes, midpoint of our SEAventure you will have a chance to enjoy snacks, fresh fruits, refreshments, and bottled water. It's not a full lunch since your SEAventure is not over yet! So we recommend that you have something to eat before your SEAventure.

Can you provide round-trip transportation to the Fajardo Ferry Terminal? Yes. We can arrange for a private transportation service to pick you up at any San Juan/Metro area Hotel and the town of Rio Grande (Gran Melia, Wyndham Rio Mar Hotels). If you are staying at the El Conquistador Resort we recommend Taxi service. Round-trip transportation cost from San Juan Area is $15.00 per person and from Rio Grande Area $10.00 per person. These rates require a minimum of 8 persons (for a total of $120 and $80 respectively) . Please contact us because we may be able to coordinate the space with other guests to meet the minimum requirements. Also, if the minimum requirement of 8 persons is not met, you can pay for the additional spaces that are needed. Another option is to rent a car and follow our driving directions and maps that you can see if you click on our Directions tab, to the Fajardo Ferry Terminal. Hotels could also arrange for a private taxi service, but this options may be costly. What happens if we miss the tour because the Ferry is delayed?
You will not be charged in the event you miss our tour because PRMTA delays/cancels the trip. If by any reason you arrive late to Fajardo Ferry Terminal and miss the Ferry, you will be fully charged for the tour as per our Terms and Conditions.
