Monitoring Software

for Wireline & Slickline Operations A National Oilwell Varco Affiliate

Cerberus for Wireline™

is unique modeling
software developed to
predict the downhole
behavior of wireline and slickline.
Where conventional stretch charts and
'rules of thumb' generally apply only
to vertical wells, this software uses
sophisticated and proven modeling algorithms to analyze the effect
of deviated well profiles and

Well Intervention
numerous parameters on the
ability to perform the job.

Developed with both job

planning and execution in mind,
Cerberus for Wireline™ provides answers to many critical job design
questions for complex / deviated wellbores and may help prevent
costly failures and downtime. The software may also allow jobs to
be undertaken with confidence which might not previously have been
attempted on cable.

Can I reach the target depth and return to surface safely?

What toolstring geometry will be able to navigate the bends in the well?
Is there a risk of drum crush?
What is the best weak point selection for the job?
How much weight do I need to get down?
How much can I pull if the tools or cable get stuck?
If the production tubing is buckled, can the job still be
performed successfully?
If a tractor is needed to reach TD, what is the maximum pull required?

Cerberus for Wireline™ can also be run as a

real-time monitor at the wellbore when run with a
data acquisition system such as CTES' Orion™ .

MODELING & MONITORING FOR

SLICKLINE & WIRELINE OPERATIONS

In previous sections (Wireline Useful Information) equations have been

given for calculating the weak point force (for weak point selection),
stretch (for depth correction) and stuck point determination. These equa-
tions are useful for vertical wells. However, these calculations become
much more complex for deviated wells.

The equations mentioned above take only the weight of the tool string and
the cable into consideration. These equations do not consider:

• The belt friction of the cable being pulled around curves in the
wellbore

• The bending friction of the tool string as it is bent around curves

in the wellbore

• The lifting force of the fluids flowing up the well

• The fluid flow down the well in cases where tools are being
"pumped down"

• The force of a tractor on the cable that could be pulling the tools
into the well

• The temperature profile of the well and its effect on the cable
length

• The pressure profile of the well and its effect on the cable length

• The change in friction due to rollers or knuckle joints in the tool

string

Modeling Software

A modeling software package can provide a modeling tool which takes all
of these parameters into consideration.

A complete software package can be used in all phases of a wireline job:

Modeling Software

Job design - Main use is to determine if a given run can or cannot be

safely performed with cable-conveyed tools to the desired depth. It helps
optimize the weak point and tool string configuration for the job

Job planning and presentation - It allows the user to present a detailed

simulation of the job to the customer, justifying tool selection and validat-
ing the use of wireline over CT or pipe-conveyed methods. This is particu-
larly significant for Tractor jobs.

Job execution - It will tell the operator whether the measured wellsite
data is within expectations and visualize the margin of safety in case of
unexpected or non-defined situations (f.i. when shifting a sleeve). In con-
junction with an advanced data acquisition system it will provide real-time
monitoring, depth corrections, and depth and tension alarms.
The following is a list of questions that can be answered using modeling
software:
• Can the tools be deployed to the required depth and returned to surface
safely?
• What is the best tool configuration to reach the target depth? Will rollers
or knuckle joints help?
• How much tool weight do I need to overcome wellhead pressure and
upward flow in the production tubing?
• Do I need a tractor to reach TD, and if so how much will it need to pull
and at what depth?
• What is the best weak point selection for the job, to maximize overpull
without risking breakage?
• What production flowrate would push the tools back up the hole, for
example after perforating?
• What is the maximum allowable pull at the tool, for example, when stuck,
fishing or moving a sleeve?
• If the production tubing is buckled (corkscrewed), will I still be able to pull
out of hole?
• What is the tool depth, correcting for stretch?
• The cable is differentially stuck in a highly deviated well. Where is the
stuck point?
• Is there a risk of cable drum crush if I spool too quickly?
• How fast can I run a packer in hole without risk of cable compression and
possible birdcaging?
• What tool configuration will be able to pass a given dogleg?

Real-Time Monitoring

Real-Time Monitoring

Some modeling software packages

can be used as a real-time monitor
when run with a data acquisition sys-
tem.

Measured depth and weight are com-

pared with model predictions, and
visual and audible warnings given if
significant discrepancies are
Orion™ DAS from CTES, LP detected.

Intelligent alarms warn you if you

approach the surface, or downhole
obstacles such as tubing shoes or
nipples, too quickly.
