The Sound of Music – Evylin Glennie & Bismillah Khan

“God may have taken her hearing but he has given her back something extraordinary. What we hear, she feels - far more
deeply than any of us. That is why she expresses music so beautifully.” – with this introduction we get this chapter that
clears the theme of this prose that irrespective to the fact that Evylin was a deaf, she had created a remarkable story of her
own.
“Ustad Bismillah Khan, the shehnai maestro” as mentioned. Ustad Bismillah Khan is the face of shehnai in India and
around the world. He had been playing shehnai since his childhood, got this telent as a legacy from his family.
Introduction -
The story starts with the present time where Evylin is 17 years old and she is going to Royal Academy of Music in
London. As she wasn’t deaf since starting, she knew to speak and understand others by lip reading (a skill which she had
developed over the time afterwards she became deaf.)
Overview -
The chapter has two parts – one story is of Evylin and another story is of Bismillah Khan.
A sudden issue arose with Evelin’s hearing ability when she was eleven years old. But her passion didn’t stop her from
pursuing music as her profession. She started learning music by sensing if through vibration and created a benchmark.
Evylin’s teacher percussionist Ron Forbes spotted her potential. He is responsible to shape her music career. Evylin
gained a huge success in her career. Not only performing for earning her bread, she did concerts for free of cost for
charity.
Ustad Bismillah Khan, the famous shehnai player started his music journey in his childhood. As he got this skill as a
legacy from his family, he continued with playing shehnai as his passion. [The title of the chapter is apt to use as the both
stories are about music and its journey only.] Bismillah Khan won many awards including Bharat Ratana for his immense
contribution to the field of music [shehnai].
Conclusion -
Evylin did not leave the hope to become a successful percussionist one day. She struggled hard as she was deaf and
become an example for other that if she could learn music irrespective to be deaf, others can learn and master the skill
they are passionate about.
Bismillah khan as said the maestro of shehnai, made an unforgettable contribution in the field of music. He is the face of
shehnai. Evylin and Bismillah Khan both are the examples of truest passion and love for the music.
He once said that he would not go anywhere in the world other than India as he would miss India and Banaras a lot.
