The H.E Ambassador

Embassy of the Republic of Korea
Colombo

Dear Sir/ Madam,

I am (name), an enthusiast and dedicated graduate with excellent educational credentials and
progressive industrial experience in computer science and data analytics. I am eagerly seeking to
follow the Korean language program at Kyungpook National University in South Korea and intend
to enroll for the intake in March 2024. Upon completion of the Korean Language Program, my
goal is to seamlessly transition into the Master's program in Computer Science and Engineering.
My envisioned career plan combines my aspirations to join a leading IT company in Sri Lanka
with a parallel commitment to academic enrichment as a visiting lecturer in reputable universities
in Sri Lanka.

Academic Background
Ever since I was a child, I had a keen interest in Mathematics. I still remember how I was fascinated
by the concepts of number crunching as a high school student. The challenge of thinking and the
process of logic behind the subject emboldened my deeply felt passion towards it.

With that note, I selected the Physical Science stream for my university entrance examination
where the major subject areas were Combined Mathematics, Physics, and Chemistry. In Sri Lanka,
nearly 250,000 students sit for the university entrance examination every year. Only 10% of these
students are fortunate to enter a university since it is the most competitive examination in Sri
Lanka. However, after passing this examination with flying colors, I was able to enter the
University of Colombo, which is one of the most prestigious universities in Sri Lanka.
My undergraduate curriculum was composed of courses in the disciplines of Statistics and
Mathematics as major subjects and Computer Science and Management Science as secondary
choices. Having maintained an excellent academic record in the first two years at the university, I
was fortunate enough to get selected as one of the top 20 students to follow the Information
Technology and Management degree program, majoring in Computer Science and Statistics
disciplines. I successfully completed my bachelor’s degree obtaining a Second Class (Upper
Division) with an overall GPA of 3.41/4.30.
Some of the pivotal experiences during my undergraduate years were my involvement in the
Advanced Level Z-Score Predicting Application project, the Dashboard implementation of red
wine quality, and the E-Channeling Web Application.
These projects not only solidified my technical skills but also honed my ability to collaborate
effectively and deliver impactful solutions in a dynamic environment.
In tandem with my coursework, I undertook a series of online courses, including Python for
Everybody Specialization courses, courses for Understanding & Visualizing Data with Python,
course for Foundations for Big Data Analysis with SQL, ‘What is Data Science’- IBM Data
Science Professional Certificate and certificate for Communicating business analytics result which
are offered by Cousera Online Education platform. These experiences extended my theoretical
knowledge into practical applications, offering me a comprehensive understanding of data
analytics and data science.
Furthermore, I pursued my undergraduate research under the topic “A Study on Factors Associated
with Stress and Anxiety Level of Undergraduates of Universities in Western Province, Sri Lanka
During Covid-19 Pandemic". The main objectives of this study were to explore the factors that
significantly affect the mental health of undergraduates during the COVID-19 pandemic and to
assess the extent to which associated factors predict the mental health disorder level of university
students with best performance & high accuracy. While conducting my research I gained
knowledge in Data Preprocessing, Exploratory Data Analysis, Data Visualization, Supervised and
Unsupervised Machine Learning, and Shapley Additive Explanations. Considering the quality and
the amount of work that I have done on my research I got through my thesis defense in the first
attempt, received excellent comments from all the examiners and I was able to obtain an “A” grade
for it.

Professional experience

As a partial fulfillment of the degree, I was able to complete an internship of 6 months related to
Data Analytics and Data Science at MAS Active Trading (PVT) Ltd, Sri Lanka. During my
internship period, I had the privilege to gain hands-on experience in developing and maintaining
dashboards, and databases and conducting research to gather data on specific domains.

Soon after the completion of my BSc. degree, I was absorbed into the permanent staff of Teejay
Lanka PLC which is positioned as Sri Lanka’s premier and leading multinational fabric
manufacturer. During my service, I was privileged to be exposed and skilled in analyzing data
using statistical tools, and techniques and providing reports, working with operational research.
My work experience has sharpened my critical thinking and analytical skills, developing my
capacity to deal with people, and several organizations and integrate different disciplines.

My next objective is to follow a Master’s program in Computer Science and Engineering that will
provide me necessary background, knowledge, and training to sharpen my skill set which is very
much required to achieve my long-term goals of becoming an accomplished researcher and gaining
expertise as a data professional.
Why I selected South Korea
South Korea’s educational system is one of the best in the world. Also, South Korea's vibrant
technological landscape, coupled with its rich cultural heritage, provides an ideal setting for me to
broaden my academic horizons and contribute to the global discourse in my field. Further, South
Korea is at the forefront of innovation and technology. Choosing a master's program in South
Korea allows me to engage in cutting-edge research and work with leading experts in my field.
Universities in South Korea often have diverse student populations, including international
students. Networking with peers from around the world can enrich my academic experience and
create valuable connections for future collaborations. With the growing popularity of K-pop,
Korean dramas, and Korean fashion, I am impressed by the Fascinating tradition. Hence Studying
in South Korea seems like a unique and remarkable experience academically and culturally.

Why I selected Kyungpook National University in South Korea

After carefully assessing various institutions with their research areas, academic excellence,
profiles of faculty, industrial exposure, and the environment I have concluded that the Kyungpook
National University best fits my requirements in the process of achieving my goals. Based on my
readings, Kyungpook National University ranked 1st in national universities, 16th in Korea, and
520th in the world in the ‘2024 QS World University Rankings’ recently announced by QS, a
global university evaluation agency based in the UK. In particular, KNU ranked first among
national universities for the fourth consecutive year.

Why Korean Language Program

Before starting my master’s degree I’m willing to study the Korean language since I believe that
proficiency in the Korean language is essential for a meaningful academic and social experience,
especially as I plan to pursue a master’s degree in computer science and engineering at Kyungpook
National University. My decision to learn the Korean language is rooted in my strong desire to
fully immerse myself in the academic and cultural environment of South Korea. I recognize the
importance of effective communication and cultural integration, not only as a student but also as
a future researcher and professional in the field of Computer Science and Engineering. Learning
Korean will not only facilitate communication with my peers and professors but will also enable
me to engage more deeply with the rich academic and cultural landscape that South Korea offers.
I am committed to dedicating the time and effort necessary to excel in the Korean Language
Program and I am excited about the prospect of becoming fluent in Korean.

Goals and career plans

Upon completion of the Korean Language Program, my goal is to seamlessly transition into the
Master's program in Computer Science and Engineering. I am confident that language proficiency
will not only enhance my academic performance but will also enable me to fully integrate into the
research community, actively participate in academic discussions, and collaborate effectively with
my peers and professors.
Upon completion of my master's program, my immediate goal is to return to Sri Lanka and focus
on becoming a subject matter expert in data science in a leading IT company while concurrently
contributing to the academic community through my role as a visiting lecturer. Over the next five
years, I envision progressing within the company, taking on increasingly challenging roles that
allow me to lead and innovate. Building upon my industry experience, I aspire to share my
knowledge and insights with the next generation of professionals. Becoming a visiting lecturer at
a reputable university such University of Colombo School of Computing (UCSC) and the
University of Moratuwa aligns with my commitment to academic excellence and my desire to
contribute to the development of future leaders in the field.

Sponsorship and Financial Stability

Having carefully assessed the financial commitments associated with pursuing the Korean
language program and master’s program, I want to assure you that I am fully committed to self-
funding with the sum of USD 12,800 for my education. I am fortunate to have secured sponsorship
from my beloved father (financially supporter name), who has funded the sum of USD 4,800,
which adds an extra layer of financial stability to my academic pursuit.

I want to clearly state that I intend to return to Sri Lanka upon completing my studies. I am
dedicated to utilizing the knowledge gained to address challenges and make a positive impact in
my homeland. In addition, my deep-rooted family ties in Sri Lanka serve as a constant reminder
of my commitment to return and contribute to my family. I must return to Sri Lanka as the eldest
daughter in the family to look after the family's necessities. As a family, we share the greatest
bond, and I am close to my family who had been lavishly spending on my education and every
other aspect to bring me to the present stage.
