1. What is CMB?

Ans: CMB stands for Cosmic Microwave Background. It is also sometimes called the CBR, for
Cosmic Background Radiation, although this is really a more general term that includes
other cosmological backgrounds, eg infra-red, radio, x-ray, gravity-wave, neutrino. The
CMB contains hugely more energy than any other cosmic radiation source, however, so it is
the dominant component of the overall CBR spectrum. Other acronyms, such as CMBR,
are also sometimes used.

2. How many satellites India have?

Ans: India has launched 116 satellites since 1975. Indian Space Research Organization (ISRO) is
responsible for India's Space Program. In February 2017, ISRO has created a new record by
launching 104 satellites in one go. Out of these 104 satellites, only 3 of these were Indian
Satellites.

3. How do we know that cosmic background radiation exists?

Ans: The Big Bang theory predicts that the early universe was a very hot place and that as it
expands, the gas within it cools. Thus the universe should be filled with radiation that is
literally the remnant heat left over from the Big Bang, called the “cosmic microwave
background"

4. Explain Weather Satellite?

Ans: Weather Satellite is a type of satellite that is primarily used to monitor the weather and
climate of the Earth. Satellites can be either polar orbiting, seeing the same swath of the
Earth every 12 hours, or geostationary, hovering over the same spot on Earth by orbiting
over the equator while moving at the speed of the Earth's rotation. These meteorological
satellites, however, see more than clouds and cloud systems. City lights, fires, effects of
pollution, auroras, sand and dust storms, snow cover, ice mapping, boundaries of ocean
currents, energy flows, etc., are other types of environmental information collected using
weather satellites.

5. How was CMB discovered?

Ans: Theoretical work around 1950 showed the need for a CMB for consistency with the
simplest relativistic universe models. In 1964, US physicist Arno Penzias and radio-
astronomer Robert Woodrow Wilson rediscovered the CMB, estimating its temperature as
3.5 K, as they experimented with the Holmdel Horn Antenna.

6. Where is the cold spot?

Ans: The CMB Cold Spot or WMAP Cold Spot is a region of the sky seen in microwaves that
has been found to be unusually large and cold relative to the expected properties of the
cosmic microwave background radiation (CMBR).
