I- READING & COMPREHENSION

A) Before reading the text, answer the question below.
How does your daily routine contribute to the balance of natural ecosystems, considering
activities like transportation, consumption, and waste generation?

B) Read the text.

The life on Earth is supported by a complex system of living
things called an ecosystem. The main components of an
ecosystem are the plants and animals that live there, but it also
includes non-living things like soil, water, and air. There are two types of ecosystems: natural
ecosystems and artificial ecosystems. A natural ecosystem is one that develops naturally,
with no help from humans, while an artificial ecosystem is created or changed by human
activity. All ecosystems have three basic functions: producing food, recycling materials, and
cleaning up waste. The organisms in an ecosystem rely on each other for these functions.
For example, green plants use sunlight to make food through photosynthesis. They are
called producers because they produce their own food. Animals that eat plants are called
primary consumers because they get their energy from the plants. Animals that eat other
animals are called secondary consumers because they get their energy from the primary
consumers. When an organism dies, decomposers like bacteria and fungi break down
its body into simple substances. These substances return to the soil and can be used
again by the producers. The health of an ecosystem depends on the balance between its
living and non-living parts. If an ecosystem is healthy, it can recover quickly from changes
or damage. But if the balance is disturbed, the whole ecosystem can be affected. For
example, a drought can kill plants, which means that the primary consumers have no
food. As a result, the secondary consumers will also die, and the decomposers won't have
enough food to recycle. Human activity has a big impact on ecosystems. We cut down
forests to make room for farms or houses, and we pollute rivers and oceans with chemicals.
Sometimes, this is done without understanding the effects it can have on the ecosystem.
In other cases, people work to protect ecosystems by creating national parks or wildlife
reserves.
