CATALOGS
The BEDB (Backup Exec Database) contains inventory information for every piece of media, each of which has a
unique GUID-style identifier, media set assignments and current location details
The Catalogs contain the details of every protected object (individual files, emails etc.), where that object came from,
which media it is stored in, and the location within the media.
Note: Backup Exec 20 uses Microsoft SQL Express 2014 32-bit as the default database (BEDB) repository.
Tape Cloud
Check the Backup Exec hardware compatibility list. Confirm the storage devices are supported:
1
backupexec.com/compatibility
Install storage device hardware on the server. Use the appropriate Windows hardware setup
2
functions.
Check your Windows security settings. Ensure they work properly with the Backup Exec service
3 accounts.
Run the Backup Exec Environment Check. Ensures the installation process can complete. Runs
4
automatically during installation.

Configure storage devices you want to use for your backup jobs. You can configure storage devices at
1
the same time you create backup jobs for your environment.
Install the Agent for Windows or the Agent or Linux on servers to be backed up. Virtual Machines do
2 not require an agent for backups but do for restores.
Decide which credentials you want Backup Exec to use when browsing and making backup selections.
3 Some backups can use the existing Backup Exec logon account while others require you to create a
new account. Remember that accounts also need rights to restore. See Article 100001916
Configure backup jobs with data retention information. Backup Exec uses Data Lifecycle
4 Management (DLM) to automatically remove outdated backups from disk and cloud storage and to
overwrite expired tapes. See Article 100032333
Private Clouds
• Store data on a company’s intranet or hosted data center for increased security
• Management, maintenance and updating of data centers is the responsibility of the
company
Hybrid Clouds
• Combination of public and private cloud storage
• Policy engines keep frequently used data on-site while simultaneously moving
inactive data to the cloud
• Combines the advantages public cloud storage with the security and full control of
private cloud storage
