Concept 1

A house that could expand seamlessly without feeling haphazardly put,it

would be able to grow in phases thus energy interms of electricity and labour
is not wasted on rooms not needed at the moment since one expands only
when his finances increase or family increases.

wood finish
Wood finish from the flooring to the ceiling is easy to
work with in the case of assembling and is cost effective
and also has a good aesthetic feel to it.
Not forgetting the environment, the wood is made from soft
wood timber bought from nileply industries in Uganda
which plants a tree for every tree cut.
11

flexible furniture
This will enable the small space in the pod to be efficiently utilised.

ENSI COMMUNITY ESTATE

22

These pictures were taken in Iganga Town in

eastern Uganda.
This is not the only place where such incomplete
buildings are springing up. Most of the time,
Land developers borrow huge amounts of money
to construct these buildings but due to high costs of
construction and high interest bank rates, they fail to
complete the building since the return in investments
are low. such buildings are now common through out
the country and can last up to 20 years with no
construction going on leaving the streetscape
in such a poor state.
SOLUTION:URBAN SHELF
23

Basing on Max Schwitallas theory on housing development, a top-down, bottom-up strategy can be adopted whereby the
urban shelf consisting of the substructure, beams, slabs, circulatory systems, basic utilities and columns are constructed by the land owner
creating land for settlements to be built on by the tenant. This is sort of like the land developer meeting the land settler half way in a way
that costs are cut in construction by the land developer since the the settler can stay within the
viscinity of his choice and customise it to and grow a home according to his or her choice since space is available
24

ENSI COMMUNITY URBAN

SHELF...

Applying the urban shelf concept in Uganda, Ensigo plans to begin by utilising the incomplete buildings within the the region
and placing ensigo pods on top of them, first of all, we shall need to ensure the buildings are structurally fit. Once the
concept and financing kicks off, we shall proceed to construct our very own urban shelf, we intend to fund the construction
using a lottery draw where by money will collected through lotteries from the locals and the winners will win a space on the
urban shelf.
25

Complete with a roof garden

for hanging clothes, relaxing
and gardening, the
ensi urban shelf is ideal
for the aspiring rich on the
move towards building
their lives. The urban shelves
will be situated in regions
that offer exclusive amenities
like bio gas electricity,
water collection units,
ingrown fruits and vegetables.
A place for the mind to
think about their purpose in
life and that life is
a marathon.
26
Basing on Max Schwitalla’s theories
of housing development, one can design
platforms on which to house the pods,
this is suitable for real estate developers
with limited land. The developer can
concenttrate on the true essence
of architecture which is user experience
even as one is still growing thus
eliminating slums.
ENSI COMMUNITY ESTATE 27

The ensi community

estates will be comprised
of space for pods to be
assembled and once one has
acquired his own piece of
land outside or within the
estate, he or she can shift
to that piece of land and
expand into a full home.
