Group Project
Chapter 1
Title: Enhanced Security System with Human, Vehicle Detection, and Keypad Access Control

1. Project Background

Security breaches pose significant risks to residential and commercial properties,

necessitating the deployment of robust security systems. Traditional security measures may
fall short in effectively detecting and responding to intrusions, highlighting the need for
innovative solutions incorporating sensor technologies and access control mechanisms. The
management of a bustling commercial complex, comprising various businesses, offices, and
amenities, recognizes the paramount importance of security in safeguarding the premises,
assets, and occupants. In light of recent security incidents and growing concerns, the
management has decided to implement an advanced security system to enhance perimeter
protection, intrusion detection, and access control.

2. Introduction

Our project aims to design and implement a security system for residential or commercial
premises by integrating human and vehicle detection sensors, as well as keypad access
control. This multi-layered approach will enhance security measures by providing robust
intrusion detection and access control mechanisms.

3. Problem Statement

Existing security systems may lack the capability to provide multi-layered protection,
including human and vehicle detection, as well as keypad access control, leading to
vulnerabilities and security lapses.

4. Significance of the Study

Implementing a security system with that significantly enhance perimeter security, reduce
false alarms, and improve overall situational awareness. By incorporating keypad access
control, the system can further restrict unauthorized access to secured areas.

5. Objectives

Develop a comprehensive security system integrating sensors for human and vehicle
detection, Implement keypad access control mechanism with password authentication.
Evaluate the effectiveness of the system in detecting intrusions and controlling access to
secured areas. Assess the impact of the system on overall security posture and response
times.

Chapter 2: Implementation
1 Components Used in the Project:

 Human Body sensor: ( HC-SR501/HC SR505)

 ultrasonic distance sensors: ( HC SR04)
 Keypad: H0308
 Microcontroller: ESP32 Wroom 32 Wemos
 LCD display: 2 X 16
Specification of the components to be downloaded online
The Hardware that must be designed and implemented to solve the identified problem must
have the following requirements and specifications.

a. Digital inputs – Human Body Detection Sensors: Passive infrared sensors (PIR) will be
strategically place on the breadboard
b. Digital inputs: Vehicle Detection Sensors: Ultrasonic sensors will be will be strategically
place on the breadboard
c. Digital inputs: Key pad to create password for access control
d. Digital output: LCD module – The LCD must be used to indicate what alarm condition
has been detected. It is highly likely alarms will be activated at the same time, but there
is a good possibility that two different types of alarms may be activated.

Chapter 3: Group Projects Assignment Requirements (What should be in the Report)

a) Chapter 1: Project Proposal (Introduction and purpose of the study): Discussion of the
project proposal. This includes the following aspects that need to be covered in the
chapter. Definition of terms, list of tables, list of figures, acronyms and abbreviations, the
introduction, background of the topic, Problem statement, significance of the study,
objectives, project plan, proposed budget for the project, time schedule how the project
will be conducted, limitations and the chapter conclusion.

b) Chapter 2: Literature Review: Researched literature is aimed to address the components

that will be used in the project. Each component or module used must be discussed in
detail.

c) Chapter 3: Research Design and Methodology: Explanation of the design will be

discussed, how it will be done and what outcome is to be achieved. A block diagram
should be presented and within the scope of the work each block must be discussed in
detail.

d) Chapter 4: Hardware design: Introduction to hardware modules or components that form

part of the project. Circuit diagrams representing each block in the block diagram must be
provided. Provide discussions of how these circuits were tested and what results were
obtained. Results may be presented in a table or graphical format. The practical build of
the hardware must be demonstrated.
e) Chapter 5: Software Design: ESP32 Arduino IDE should be provided as the platform for
the software design. A flow chat diagram which illustrates the operation of the Software
must be provided. The coding structure should provide showing all necessary include files,
defining GPIO’s, setup and loop routines.

f) Chapter 7: Conclusions and recommendations: Introduction and chapter review.

Overview discussion of the overall report, what were the findings after completion of the
research project, recommendations based on the findings, recommendations for future
studies, conclusion of the chapter.

g) Design of the proposed solution: In parallel to the research and documentation being
done, the student needs to do the hardware and software designs, develop a bread board
to build the hardware, write the relevant software for the final project solution. This is
required to indicate the competency of the student to produce a final solution for the
identified industry related problem.

h) Final project demonstration: The final presentation for the project will consist out of two
parts namely:

i) The written report document that must be handed in for marking

ii) Project demonstration, demonstration of the working solution referring to
the designed hardware and software project requirements and to indicate
methods that were used to provide the final solution to the identified
problem.
iii) The final hardware must be built on breadboard and demonstrated during
the project demonstration.

Group Assignment
A group task will be required whereby students will be divided into groups 4 per group. Tasks
within the groups must be decided between students and each student will be responsible
for a certain task.

The compiled document should not be more than four pages, consisting of a cover page with
title and the names and student numbers of each participating group member. The task or
combined tasks of each group member must be highlighted in writing and the group leader
will be responsible for submission of the document. However each student will be responsible
for their specific task and must compile their task on the document. It is not the group leader’s
task to compile the whole document, he/she only ensures that all work is done before
submitting the document and work is done equally. Group leaders must be selected by team
members and communicated with the lecturer
