Task 1

This task will be started in the Lab Room H010 on the Gunt apparatus TM225e during
your allocated time. The readings will be taken during this session and the report will be
finalised using the appropriate data sheet and submitted with task 2 online.

2.7 Solve a problem involving tractive effort and resistance, including mass,
acceleration, and friction on either a vertical or inclined plane.

1. A friction on inclined apparatus is setup as shown in figure 1 below. Follow the

experiment instructions below and fill out the attached worksheet to find the
coefficient of friction of various materials.

I. Set the plane at an inclination angle of 40°.

II. Add weights of 4N to the weight’s hanger.
III. Place sliding object with Aluminium/Propylene or Brass side on the
plane and hook it with the weights hanger by means of a rope.
IV. Add weights to the hanger until the sliding objects tend to move.
V. Note down the material combination, weights and rope tension
keeping the block in equilibrium just before it start moving up.

Using the equation for the friction law, the equation for Tension (T) for the block to just start moving
up the slope is given by:

𝑇 = 𝑊(𝜇 cos 𝜃 + sin 𝜃)

Where W = weight of the object
µ = coefficient of friction
 = angle of incline
Find the coefficient of friction for the three materials combination.

Task 2

All the questions in this task will be answered and submitted as a Home Based
assignment and submitted in conjunction with the Task 1 report.

2.3 Explain and solve a problem on linear momentum

1. A boat A of mass 25 tons is set to move at 8 knots towards another boat B weighing
18 tons which is moving at 15 knots in the opposite direction. The two boats
collide and move along together.
a. Explain in detail with the help of diagrams what does the law of conservation
of linear momentum states.
b. Using the law of conservation of momentum find the common velocity of the
two boats after the impact in knots.
c. If a drag force of 0.5kN is applied to the two boats, how long will they take to
come to a complete stop.

(2, 1, 3 marks)

2.8 Solve a problem involving energy, work and power

2.9 Explain and solve a problem on the conservation of energy.

2. A drum has a mass of 60 kg and a radius of gyration of 0.32m. The drum has got
a radius of 0.39 m. It starts from rest and rolls down a slope 41 m long on an incline
of 30O to the horizontal. Using the law of conservation of energy, find:
a. The actual vertical height lost by the drum.
b. The final angular and linear velocity of the drum.
c. The power developed by the drum if the downward movement is done in
26s.

2.13 Explain and solve a problem involving centripetal acceleration and centripetal force
on a body.

3. A centrifugal clutch must transmit a torque of 300 Nm through four sliding heads.
The coefficient of friction between the drum and the friction lining is 0.95. Each of
the three sliding heads have a mass of 0.5 kg acting at a radius of 0.14 m. (Radius
to centre of gravity of heads) The inside diameter of the drum is 0.35 m.
The shoes are held using springs having a spring stiffness of 1.5kN/m and need to
be compressed by 3.2 mm before the shoes contact the inner lining of the drum.
Calculate the minimum angular speed required in RPM, such that this torque is
transmitted through the clutch.
